I have the oppertunity to trade for a new Mossberg 590 with all the bells and whistles including a speed feed stock. As a dedicated 870 man, what does the Mossberg have to offer that the 870 doesn't besides the ambi safty and twin extractors? Do I really need this thing or do I just want a new toy...Hmm.

How modded is your 870. I'm a dedicated anti-mossberg kinda guy but i'd jump on a chance to trade an entry level 870 for a 590. The military versions had lots of upgrades and honestly the action release is in an easier to access location. The safety is my main stigma on the Mossy's...that and their general lack of quality..they just feel creaky i dunno. I'd go for it tho as the 590 is top of the line in mossy pump gun.

just the opinion of one Moss hater

You said "trade" so I'm wondering... it ain't nobody's business what you are trading so I'm not going to ask. However, if you are trading a gun you know and love for one you have to be convinced to own, it may not be worth it. On the other hand, if you are trading something else and the Moss will be an addition to the arsenal, I say go for it. Nuttin' wrong with taking a deal when it presents itself.

I'm NOT trading away my 870! What tweaked my interest in the Mossberg is the fact that the shell lifter is totally out of the way. I shoot in the pump division in tactical matches sometimes. As many of you know, it's not about how fast you can shoot the shotgun, but how fast you can keep it fed. Anything to gain an edge right?

I was being a smart a$$ earlier when I said the bayonet lug; although, it is a distinguishing feature.

I own an 18" 870, an 18" Winchester Defender, and a 20" M590A1 heavy barrel, and like all 3. The Defender is now my house gun as it is the lightest and most manuverable. But the 590 is my SHTF gun as it is the toughest and holds more shells.

On the 590, I like the position of the safety and the action release, which, BTW, is the same as the Defender's. But I especially like the dual extractors and the position of the lifter, which, as you observed, is not in the way of reloading.

If I were buying again, I would buy the 590 configured the same but with out the heavy barrel to keep the weight down (configuration 50663 - my heavy barrel is 51663).

That is my main reason for not liking the 870 and many other brands of shotguns.

I live in iowa and shooting in the winter requires gloves and that just seems to bite my gloves at least once every time I have loaded one.

But its not the only reason I like the Mossberg either :D

Not to mention I have seen an 870 with a live shell stuck between the bolt and shell lifter. I have no idea how it happend but a gentleman came over to me from the trap range and asked if I could help him his shotgun was jammed and he had no tools to fix it (I always bring a tool box to the range with me). I had to remove the trigger group to retrive the LIVE round.

This seems like a very dangerous situation to be in.

With the position of the lifer on the Mossbergs this is virtually Impossable to do on 500/590s.

You describe exactly where I was about 7 years ago.
I am now a total Mossberg fanboy. I had the opportunity to pick up a 590A1, and I basically did it solely for kicks. I didn't think much of Mossys, and was green label snob.
After I tried it out, I really developed a liking for the slide release position. The safety didn't bother me on the 870 so much, because I always ended up replacing them with SGT units. Which leads into my next point.
I was in the process of tricking out an 870P that I had picked up, and I realized that on top of paying for metal parts that replaced plastic ones and some other enhancements for the stock 870P, I was going to spend even more money adding an extension, enlarged safety, Speedfeed stock, and GRS kit.
Then I realized that I basically got all of that in the 590A1 for less than the original 870P.
I now rock the 590A1, and the new 870P project gun got sold to a friend.

Well, even with it being a little warm down here most of the year, I still shoot with gloves a lot. And I like the Mossy for that same reason.

You are describing the Remington jam. It is/was a known problem. Most newer (like the past 15 years at least) 870s will have a Flex Tab mod on the lifter, it looks like a U. This is supposed to make it easier to remedy the jam. You just have to shove back harder on the slide.

They just look like all business when pimped out!

Click the pic for enlargement

Seriously though,

The easy feeding and all metal parts are a plus!

Since that was me you were quoting, why do you make the above statement? It is not like I am going to wear a regular barrel out, even with heavy shooting. About the only advantage I can see to the heavy barrel is that it would be more durable if used as a club or with a bayonet. A butt stroke, however, is more effective than a baseball swing, so I don't see myself using it as a club.

About 6 years ago I had a option for a Mossy 590 in blue for $150. I grabbed it since the current 870 at the time was a pawn shop parts gun and not as well dressed.

I was a big fan of the gun but had limited opportunities to shoot it. When I did it was with bird shot and limited amounts at that.

A couple of years later I moved back to Florida and brought the Mossy with me. I got ready to get back into some tactical shotgun shooting games and took the mossy to the range. Shooting Buck shot and slugs the tang safety had a bad habit of moving slightly under recoil and stopping the action cold. It was a "bang...remove safety, bang...remove safety, bang...remove safety..." I wimped out and went back to my beloved 870 platform. Found a ancient 870 Wingmaster in original police style, added a couple of options and been happy ever since.

I had the original 590 not the 590A1. I hear the A1 model solved the safety issue and I would buy one to have as a fun gun BUT I have NO NEED for one and would not consider them as my only option for a shotgun. That safety lever issue, minor as it probably was, is enough to sour me on the gun for social purposes. Once burned it is very hard to go back.
