Do you mind shooting next to a semi auto?

I have read several threads concerning the semi auto shooters ejected spent shells considered as inconsiderate or a distraction. I can understand those feelings during a competition but what about a practice round ? is it a non issue ?

I try to avoid when a semi without a shell catcher is starting on a station to my left, I'm a righty shooter. I know from 5 to 20 shells will be flying my way. The club where I shoot is semi-public. Some public shooters don't care about their ejected shells striking another shooter or their gun and interfering with the concentration of all squad mates.

Happened for the first time a few weeks ago. I don't think he had a clue that it was sorta bad form, and i was having too much fun to care too much. But dang if they weren't flying across my face from time to time, and essentially coming right at me 25'times. Just remembering now. <chuckle>

I would not be comfortable doing it, throwing shells at my neighbor constantly.

cheers

If the shells are not hitting me it's not a problem. Once when in competition I had a shooter to my left shooting a semi and those shells would bounce off my legs.
After the first round I just stepped back from the line one step, waited for the hull to it the grass then step forward, settle in, call for the bird and shoot.
Really disrupted the squad, but the semi shooter soon learned it was not my fault things slowed down.

It happens a lot at the club with shooters of little experience. Not much at a registered shoot. My K-80 has custom wood and would have words if bouncing cases off that gun. My KX-6 has wood of no real character, but still wouldn't want to get it dinged. I change posts or squads before getting pelted by empty cases.

Expect unhappiness if the shooter to your right is using a 5,000 to 15,000 dollar gun even if he is not distracted.

A person using a semi-auto for trapshooting should take it upon themselves to have a shell deflector or shell catcher installed on their guns. It is just common sense. I have a Super X-1 that will throw shells into the next county. I have a shell catcher for it and also had Phillip Crenwelge weld a "nub" in the ejection port to knock down the ejected hulls if I choose to shoot doubles. Shooters using a semi-auto need to control their hulls. JMHO. Ed

I shoot an 1100 better than any other gun and had considered using mine this past year for trap doubles. I decided that although my 1100 does have a deflector and throws most (not 100%) of the hulls out in front and a bit to the right, it just isn't worth the hassle. Trying to fit yourself into a short squad with a space left vacant next to the ejection port or letting the folks know you are shooting a semi-auto when you sign up may help but it's a pain and there will still be times when it just isn't possible or at least, not practical. I shoot a Beretta 682 with very nice, expensive, custom wood and can certainly empathize with not wanting my wood dinged nor do I necessarily like hulls bouncing off my person, either. I have had that happen. It is distracting.

All of that said, on that very rare occasion that I find myself shooting doubles next to someone shooting a semi-auto to my immediate left, I just have to consider my options and decide whether to go ahead and shoot or re-squad. I like to think of myself as a gentleman and should that occasion arise (it hasn't yet) that I feel I have to re-squad, I would certainly do it in a polite way without trying to make too much of a fuss.

Bahahaha, no idea what your point is. FWIW, I will not shoot a line with gunners who take "FOREVER" to call pull.
The point is, MG Dave, that it's extremely laughable to suggest that a club would require all of its shooters to shoot a K Gun. I am pretty sure that 959 was making a joke and I was expressing my burst out of laughter.

We require a shell catcher at my club.
Shell catchers are not required at my club and it does not bother me to have a empty bounce off of me from time to time, as I realize that your can not always line up with somebody that is not shooting a semi.

What does bother me is to have and know that my empties are hitting somebody. :( " Personally " I just don't like the idea that I may be interfering or bothering a fellow club member, even though they don't voice any complaints.

I have two semi's and one O/U. I just ordered a shell catcher for each of my semi's. Again, just "personally" knowing that I am not causing a fellow club member any irritation will make for a much better day at the range. :D

The first time I took my A303 Trap to the field last spring, i was really shooting well by myself. A group of guys came up and I invited them to join me. We shot a pretty good round before it dawned on me that I was probably throwing shells at him (had never used an auto for trap). I asked him and he laughed stating "a few hit me, but no big deal". We chuckled, I paid for his round, and promptly ordered a $15 T&S catcher. I've been using it since and couldn't be happier. In summary.... I think it is rude and the fix is extremely cheap and easy. I wouldn't be upset with an auto next to me, but I woukdnt be comfortable knowing that I was disrupting a fellow shooter.

Yup, basically the same as what I just stated. {hs#

Sounds like a " Mini Me " :D

I use my 391 for DTL. It's taken some time to perfect but, if I angle my gun just a little top to the left, I can nail the shooter to my right about 50% of the time. Really gets their *** hairs up. Hahaha, one less shooter I gots to worry about on the score board.
