Man, this site is dead.
Anyone gearing up for doves?
I have six acres of millet planted as a food plot and hope to get some good shooting over it.
If anyone else plants dove food plots, what do you plant?
I wanted to plant sunflowers, but getting them to mature by mid August in west central Ks is an issue.

Actually, I live in OK but still do all my hunting in KS.
No, I'm not as excited about dove hunting as I used to be. I still go, but don't pursue than anywhere near as hard as I used to. Maybe being 66 has something to do with that.

My son and I planted sunflowers several years ago. We planted them in April and knocked them down in mid-August. They didn't produce nearly as well as we'd hoped, but we got 45-50 over the course of a couple of weeks. The reasons we didn't do well, I think, was there really weren't that many doves in our area. Plus, it was our first year of planting so there was no familiarity with it in the flyway. Finally, we didn't have particularly good weed control. Our application method wasn't ideal.

I am 66 also and really get into doves.
Part of the reason is that other bird hunting in west central Ks has been poor for a few years due to drought and heat, but it is coming back, finally.
I get to hunt them with my son, brothers and nephews, so its an event for us. Lots of shooting, great food and some good beverages after the evening hunt.

The doves were flying Sept 1 and 2, in western Ks.
Limits of them were easy to bag.

Quail hunting hasn't been the same since turkeys showed up. Fish & Game commission says there is no correlation. Not many people believe them.

I live in eastern Kansas and no dove hunting here interests me after spending a week in Argentina . Quail are rebounding quickly near where I live.

That's good news. When we moved to the country, I used to hear quail whistling. I haven't heard one for at least two years, maybe three. I hope they come back because I'd sure like to go one more time.
