Well we all called last weekend wrong and sure enough with opening day of pheasant season Saturday looks like we will get the weekend we were hoping for last weekend.

It's supposed to rain Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If your coming to Northeast Nebraska for opening day make sure you bing a tow rope and some 2x6's with you, incase you get stuck. The roads have been baked over the past month or so and any moisture is going to mud them up bad. Don't park too far off the side of the road but make sure your far enough so others can pass. Even though it is supposed to rain do not drive out into the CRP fields. We don't need any fires caused by people driving out and parking in the fields.

If you see a vehicle parked on the land you were going to hunt find another field or talk to those already parked about joining up. It doesn't have to be a zoo. Stay safe, where orange and keep hydrated. It's going to be pretty warm humping that grass wearing rain gear.

Look for the ring around the neck and the all hell breaking loose colors before pulling down on them. There are still a bunch of young roosters out there that only have red around there eyes and very little color. Make sure you know what you are shooting at before pulling down on them.

Newbie's with dogs. If you down a bird, mark the bird and send the dog in. Don't have the entire group go walking through where the bird went down looking for it. Let the dog have a chance to find it before covering the area with human scent. Even though it's going to be cool out, make sure you carry water for your dogs.

Good luck to everyone and I wish you a safe and enjoyable weekend.

From everything I've heard this should be a great weekend for pheasant and waterfowl. It will be very cool in the morning with rain on and off throughout the day (maybe even snow if the time is right).

The other good news I've seen is that pheasents are thicker this year than they have been in a very long time.

My friend has a lab who is going out for his first seaseon. He's been out in the field for training and has done really good flushing out birds. Should be an awesome weekend down here. Good luck with everything. Let us know how it goes.

Grendelrob - I agree on both accounts. :) Weather should make either tail chasing or reed squating great. The numbers in Northeast Nebraska aren't where they were 5 years ago but they are sure close. I had to chase 7 roosters away the other night just to get my mail. lol I've seen more roosters this year then I can remember seeing in the past 5 years. I think the light pressure from last year has made a world of difference in bird numbers.

Good luck to you and let us know how you did. I'll post pics on my site monday of our good fortunes. :)
