DU Ducks in the Desert National Shoot set for Las Vegas Target Setter

I am pleased to announce that I will be setting the targets for the 2023 Ducks Unlimited Ducks in the Desert Western Continental Shoot at the Clark County Shooting Park in Las Vegas March 1-5. After setting many hundreds, if not thousands of targets at major shoots over the years, I had gotten away from tournament target setting to concentrate on my clay course design and shooting instruction business across the country. DU called and said they wanted me to set the Prelim, Main Event and Super Sporting targets for the event. I actually designed the two courses at Clark County so I am very familiar with the terrain and shooting station backgrounds there. Shooters can expect fun but challenging targets that will be sneaky technical. I guess they had some sun and target visibility issues at the shoot last year. That won't happen in 2023. Right now the entry is around 200 shooters and the event usually attracts around 500 shooters. Registration is open on ScoreChaser. Hope to see you guys in Las Vegas.... It will be FUN!

Marty,
Overall I got good reports on your targets with all things considered. Good job.
I just shot this and the targets were challenging and a lot of fun!

Great job Marty!
Would have loved to have shot Marty's targets. Targets I've seen the last few years, were one reason I passed this year. Weather as well. I don't mind shooting in the wind as long as it isn't a gale. Don't mind the cold, unless wind chill becomes a factor. But as Marty says you can't contol the weather....and its hard to forecast. Yet the last few years one can forecast.....it won't be good, at least half the time. But that is not the only reason why the shoot has gone from a premier open the season shoot of 500 to what, 275 this year? Going to Vegas isn't cheap to begin with....and I'm not the gambling type.

Cost. I don't want to hear about a fund raiser. I know what fund raisers charge, and this goes above that. 20 bucks for a warm up 5 stand? You pay a penalty if you don't shoot the prelim and main. And I understand deposits.....but you have to pay in full to sign up.....and if you have a last minute issue....which is not really thee last minute, total deposit in lost.

They had a lot of ammo for awards......but total garbage to purchase.

Glad the target issue was addressed, but with everything else, I've got better shoots to go too. And....I am an avid duck hunter.

Bdog nailed it. Would have enjoyed shooting Marty’s targets. But like him I’ve been burned by bad weather twice so am cautious. If it were two weeks later like it used to be several years back, weather was almost always better. Weather is what kept me away this year. I won’t go this time of year now unless the 10-day is promising, and do not like the payment/cancellation policy, which combined means I’m going to take the chance on registering last minute. Fortunately I can book my hotel well in advance and cancel that easily.
A few years ago when I was still able to shoot I wrote a letter to the DU organizers after the DU shoot listing my concerns about the shoot. I received an answer addressing my concerns and most of them were corrected. Posting on this list probably isn't going to change anything about this shoot.

I passed again this year even after I heard that Mr. Fisher was setting the targets. First off, it is two early, especially for someone that lives roughly 1,000 miles away on the other side of the rockies. I suggest they put it off until late March or early April. It may take some coordination with AZ folks. For 2024 the AZ state is something like 1-4 Feb and the Western Regional is the first week in March, both at Ben Avery Keeping in mind this is for my convenience, as I can't speak for others, I would happily add DU if it was on a before or after weekend. As for the cost, it really is excessive. To make your event more profitable, consider attracting more shooters at a reasonable mark-up. Ask anybody who is in business, volume is what keeps you in the black.

My neighbor here at the Clay Target Ctr campground at Ben Avery was really disappointed and isn't planning on going again.

FWIW
After typing above, I recalled that the DU 2024 is immediately after the Western regional in March.

Might have to reconsider...

IIRC, this is the week they USED to throw it, and it was MUCH better timing weather wise. I suspect they've learned their lesson trying the earlier date and having relatively miserable shooting weather the past 3 of 4 years... Also makes it a nice tag-on shoot for those of us that feel like hanging around a few extra days and hitting both ;)

...all of the above plus the fact that for the last few years it's been scheduled the same weekend as the NASCAR races a few miles up the road and that adds a few $$ to everything.
