Duck numbers rise across state

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency reports that the number of ducks migrating into the state has increased substantially over the past two weeks, but the wetland habitat remains unfavorable for waterfowl over much of the state.

"In Tennessee, duck numbers are good, but dry conditions are proving to be a major problem," said Tim White, TWRA Waterfowl Program coordinator. "No significant rainfall has occurred in several weeks, and ducks are beginning to deplete food sources on refuges."

White noted that most food crops on many TWRA refuges will be depleted by late December or early January, and that none of the major rivers in West Tennessee are flooded.

"Permanent habitat, river sloughs, beaver ponds, lakes and rivers, as well as pumped impoundments and refuges are holding the majority of the ducks," White said. "Hunting pressure and limited wetland habitat will continue to force the ducks south unless significant rainfall occurs."

White reports that the most recent (Dec. 15) waterfowl survey across the state put the duck population at 467,169, which is more than double the number counted on the previous survey (Dec. 1). Nearly 97 percent of the ducks counted in the surveys were observed in refuges and wetland areas of West Tennessee, with the three units of the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge on Kentucky Lake (Tennessee River) holding the largest concentration of ducks (152,753); followed by the Black Bayou WMA (93,692), Lauderdale WMA (46,342); Hatchie NWR (43,714), and Reelfoot NWR (20,512).

Hey Rogm,
Haven't heard of them, but that doesn't mean much. This year has been better than the last couple because of the early freezes up north. Ya'll should do really well in Miss. Be sure to take your camera and post some pics for us.
Regards,
Jay
