I'm looking to purchase some Ear Muffs for the range. I've been shooting for a couple of months now, and have just been using disposable plugs for .$25 a piece. They are not very comfortable to wear, and not easy to remove/put back in again for normal conversations after a round of shots.

What do you guys reccomend for a modest pair of muffs? Less than $60. I dont know weather to go electronic as some people said that they do not work very well. Any info would be great.

Thanks.

I recently picked up a pair of Peltor "Shotgunner" muffs. Rated at 21db NRR, they supress better than the old pair of 23db-rated muffs they replaced (I did say "old"). The Shotgunners are small enough to not contact the stock, lightweight, work well, and I'm very happy with them. I paid $14.95 + shipping from Gamaleil Shooters Supply.

I've heard good things about the electronic muffs (eg, they do work), but I simply wasn't willing to pay $165 for them.

Some folks don't like the muff-style protectors due to heat buildup, but I take them off regularly, so this isn't much of a problem. Actually, they help at this time of year...

I had plugs made by an audiologist for about 35 dollars. They fit perfectly and protect me as well as the cheaper muffs. They are custom fitted to your ears so if done correctly they are very comfortable and do not bump agsinst the gun. I wear mine when using power tool, lawn mowers, etc. I think the compnay has a website and they can find a dealer near you.
I also have the muffs and just find them too clunky for shotgunning. They do work OK for Pistol shooting.

That's why I recommended the "Shotgunner" muffs that I did. They're low profile, and don't "clunk" on the stock the way my old, full sized ones did.

I've also seen low profile ones made by the "Silencio" company, though I haven't tried them. About the same price as the Peltors, which are made/marketed by AOSaftey.

Mark_T is right, go with the Remingtons, best noise reduction value I have seen, and price is right. And if you really want additional protection, buy a box of Mack's Pillowsoft Earplugs (they're white wax) at the drug store and use both. Very helpful on indoor pistol ranges. When I shoot outside, the Mack's themselves are usually sufficient.

I have a pair of slimline Midway earmuffs. I believe they were made by Peltor for Midway, but I'm not sure of that. I've had them for about 10 years and they work just fine. I usually wear a pair of ear plugs under the muffs. That works great and really reduces the noise while I'm shooting. When I step off the shooting station, I remove the muffs and leave the ear plugs in place.
