We could do the proper thing and refer to them by the scientific name to avoid such confusion....that is why they have a scientific name and then just drop the numerous colloquialisms. As it is, many of the field guides already have a partial list of common names, yet they can still very from state to state and even within a state. There is a fine line between a hobby and insanity.
encyclopedia?
just looking at the grouse, chukar, snipe confusion and seeing that we do not all have a clear understandig of the various types of game (common names, what they look like etc) i had the brilliant idea that maybe someone with lots of free time (marlands, Jay, rick etc) could built a simple library or mini encyclopedia to help with the identification and crossrefensing of the names of various american or international game animals. Nothing major, maybe just a picture with a couple of common names and some habitat information......Jay ???? hallooooo Its not how well you shoot , its how much noise your gun makes
