I bought my 870 express in 1990 and have shot over ten thousand rounds through it without a single problem. I've used a 28" vent rib w/IC Remchoke to shoot slugs and killed four deer with that setup, last year I bought a Remington fully rifled slug barrel w/ rifle sights for it and killed a nice 8 pt with it and a doe. Accuracy is good at 100yds from the bench. The only 2 things that have been a problem is that it is prone to rust if you don't oil it after a day afield. My 870 has wood buttstock and fore arm and the little finish that was on it has just about completely worn off and last fall while hunting all day in a very wet snow the forearm swelled and it was difficult to cycle the action. I put it (Forearm) by the wood stove and it was good to go the next day. I've used this gun for everything from deer to squirrel and it gets the job done. It ain't pretty but the abuse it takes from me means more to me than a pretty gun.

Mossberg is lighter and cheaper and holds 1 more round and I like the tang safety better than the one behind the trigger, but it doesn't stand up to the abuse as well and I own a Model 500, this is the visitors gun that gets lent out.

I've used the Winchester 1300 several times (On the range in the military) and of the 6 shotguns we took to a shoot 3 were Winchester 1300's and they(All 3, 3 different malfunctions) were broke before we had shot 50 rds through them, and one broke the 2nd or 3rd round.

I'm an armorer in the military and i have taken a wingmaster and 870 apart and inspected the internals of both under a magnifer at my shop. And each part of the internals are identical. Yes, the wingmaster is a little more smoother than the 870 but the parts are the same. All that has been done to the wingmaster is that the parts have been buffed to remove most of the pours in the metal to give it that smooth feeling. Anyone can do this with some 1500 grit sand paper or emery cloth. Just make sure you wash the parts with some sort of gun cleaner when finished

Hey
I just bought an 870 Express Mag. at a gunshow. It is slightly used, but in good shape, i took it apart and cleaned it up and the triger mechanism as well as all other parts fits flawlessly, and works clean. I couldn't beleive the price, at $270 i got two barrels, and a full set of chokes. I'm real happy after hunting all season last year with a new Mossberg 500, the Remington is great. I love the weight, the feel and the action is flawless. I'm sure the Wingmaster is a nice gun as well, but i couldn't ask for a better action than that, which i find in the 870 Express. Any body want to buy a Mossberg? :)

Hmmmm...I have a converted (Scattergun Technologies/Wilson Combat Border Patrol) Wingmaster 870 for the home...I am leaning to the 870 Express (used Wingmasters STILL about a hundred and a half MORE than an NEW Express)

Doorgunner...I am with you...I have held many different shotguns...some may be better than the 870 but whenever I hold the 870 it feels like home...I like the tang safety of the Mossberg better but the 870 feels like home (used it before Mossys...not a shot, guys) I really like just about everything on the Benelli Nova and ever since GLOCK invaded our shores...well plastic in the right places doesn't bother me at all...but...I want to buy American...I recently bought the gun in my sig, partially because in my maturity (haaa) the nice wood furniture and of course the 870 Wingmaster felt like home...snapped up a good bargain too. (for an EXCELLENT combat shotgun) Anyway after reading my own writing I should get the 870...but...that Benelli is sweet...arrrggghh.

I have had my remington 870 express for a couple of years now and have put thousands of shells throughit not once miss firing or giving me trouble. I beleive it is a very realiable gun. Does anyone have any tips on what color i should refinish the stock to.

I've had a 870 express for ten or so years. I did not buy it for the looks, I bought it because I needed a gun to hunt with in nasty conditions. Mud, water, snow. I not afraid to have it laying in the bottom of the duck boat or laying in the mud in a corn field. It has killed many, many types of big game and small without a problem. I now have a few nicer shotguns, but when I have to get down and dirty, I grab for the 870 Express.

My favorite color wood on the Rem Express is the "Beretta Barn Wood" brown. Usually only available on the sub $2500. Beretta's, the rich grain and swirls of this wood can only be described as "unique", like the standard grade 2by at Home Depot. To acheive this same jaw dropping finish, simply use one of two tried and true formulas: Just For Men, medium brown hair color, go lightly, leave on for 5 minutes, then rinse. WOw, does that Express look like a hi grade Beretta or what??? Number 2: Liquid shoe polish, either maroon or brown to bring out the grain just like Exhibition Grade Beretta wood! Just remember to buff with a soft cloth after ever application.
Ya know, maybe you could get that Martha Stewart shelf paper from KMart (stick on kind) and try that. Give you the same effect as the Beretta X-Tra wood.
Yup, that new finish will make you proud setting your 870 on the rack with the Kreighoffs, Perazzi's, etc.

That is one of the few posts from an unregistered guest (other than new shooters) that i really enjoyed. I have seen some of those fence post stocks you mention. RITFL!!!!!

The finish on the Express will rust quickly if you do not oil after being in the rain or snow. Not a problem for me because I am type A and carry a silicone cloth with me almost 24X7. The finish on the stock will also wear quickly if not taken care of. I use use the Old English furniture scratch hider on the stock to fill in the light spots and follow up with Johnson furniture paste wax. My stock look so good that two weeks ago when deer hunting on Long Island I was walking past a friend who asked me where I got the Walnut stock for my Express. MIKE.

I posted this on the General Board in an earlier thread. I posted it here so thet you could copy down the instructions. Any other tips you need just feel free to ask. MIKE.
