what the heck is a magazine follower..and why do people get high visibilty ones?

i've been trying to find this answer for a while.

The magazine follower is the part that actually pushes the next round out of the magazine onto the lifter. When your semi auto has an empty magazine, the magazine follower is visible at the back (loading) end of the magazine tube. Inserting a round into the magazine would push that follower forward, compressing the magazine spring.

People get high visibility magazine followers to make it easier to tell at a glance that the magazine is empty.
