Use 9's for skeet and 8's for trap. Once you get to be a trap veteran and shoot from the 22 yard line or farther, you can switch to 7.5's.

I shoot 7.5 1 1/8 oz for 12gage for both trap and skeet. If I am shooting my 410 I load 1/2 oz of 8.

In 12 ga, I shoot 8-1/2, except in light shot charge loads and spreaders. For those I use 9's.

The simple rule is that as ranges become longer, you need hevier shot and more choke to compensate for both the dispersion and the lower pellet count.

It should also be obvious that face-on shots present a larger cross-section and can be broken with a lower pattern density than is required for edge-on shots.
