This is problably off topic a bit but does anyone know of a good online field training guide forpointers? I want to start using a whistle while training my german shorthair and want to go about it the best way. Also, are there any training videos that anyone would recommend? Thanks! GSPLover

Normally I would give you a hard time about running a dog that doesn't have enough style to hold a full tail up but I won't ..this time :D I really like the Delmar Smith methods , books and videos but he's mainly geared towards horse-back trialers (did I mention I suck at dog training) and I'm a foot hunter with my English Pointer. Have you tried any of the field trialers bulletin boards? ANd if you fnd anything out would you share it? I used to have a bunch of bird dog sites bookmarked..but no more.
Huh?->Normally I would give you a hard time about running a dog that doesn't have enough style to hold a full tail up but I won't ..this time
Just teasing you about the GSP's docked tail.
Ahhh IC. I've had 2 english setters in the past and just HATE having to brush out the burrs etc after EVERY walk. The GSP's coat is GREAT!!! She can run through thick tall grass with burrs everywhere and she comes out without anything in her fur! I love it. I find shes also got more energy to run in the field too. Shes like the energizer bunny with turbo, just keeps going, and going , and going. I do love the feathers on the setters tho.
Yeah those long haired dogs are pretty and they do seem to do better in cold weather but there is just something about the majesty of the EP and the GSP on point. My English Pointer has some fairly impressive bloodlines , he was bred for horseback trials and is the same way you describe yours, he knows two speeds, full blast and locked on point, very little in between. When I got him I was actually looking for a GSP but I found out my 2nd cousin had this litter so I bought him since I knew and trusted the breeder.Do you know if your GSP has EP blood in her? I know that some breeders will do it to get a little more speed in them. I've hunted behind both kinds of GSP and there does seem to be a distinct difference, the purer bred ones won't range as far as those with a little EP in them.
I'm not sure but the pure bred GSP was breed with the EP way back in Europe to give the GSP some 'class' as it was phased. I've been field training with Emma's breeder and Emmas mother (Holly) who is going for her field dog title theis coming weekend. Holly ranges quite far and doesnt stay anywhere near the handler. Man she is fast too.
Blak................GSP. I'll take a Troller and day. Shells
HUH? Trollers for pointing?
Trollers are a retriever breed from Canada. Pointers are to much hassle, once in awhile their brains screw up and they bust the brush. Where a retriever I'll keep next to me on a hunt or until I order him into the brush. Hunts dead great. Shells
I use lab's always. They are the best i think at least. I have one fox red lab, and two choc. Browning, The Best there is because second best is well...second best.
YES!!!!!!!!!!! Scg has a winner. I had a roommate that was a Blk.Lab. Man it did the dishes and everything. Best dang dog I ever own. He was funny when he'd have a beer under his tail. One problem, only time he took off from the house in 5 years, he got hit by a car. That did not sit well with me for along time. I miss him yet. Shells
Hey GSP that gave me an idea i'm gonna go take a picture of my lab and put it on here sometime!! Browning, The Best there is because second best is well...second best.
How do I add a picture?
strubedog, I'll act as though you have no knowledge, nothing personal but someone else may need the instructions too.first the picture has to be on the web either your own web page or one of the picture hosting sites around. Right click on the pcture, click on properties, copy the address there, paste it here, add and "/> to the rear of it.
:p I know who you were talking about up there "someone may need help too!" Browning, The Best there is because second best is well...second best.Edited by: Sporting Clays Girl at: 10/30/02 9:30:09 pm
