This is my first thread, and first post here. So, hello everyone. Brief introduction, I'm 23, have been shooting handguns with my dad since I was around 10, and have a few hand guns; a S&W Model 36, Glocks; 26, 27, 33, 20, and 36, and a Italian single action, ~4" .22 LR revolver that I think was made in the mid 80's (Had the S&W since my dad gave me his when I moved to college at 17, have gotten the Glocks over the past 2.5 years since I turned 21 and got my CCW, and got the .22 maybe 4 months ago to get my girl friend into shooting). I moved from Boca Ration, FL to Orlando to go to college, and moved to Tampa around a year ago and live with my girlfriend. I have a full size smooth coat Dachshund (Frank, 22 pounds) and she has a Maltese (Lilly, 3 pounds soaking wet), Frank is an amazing alarm, and I believe he will lock onto a BGs ankle with a death grip.

I wanted to get a long gun, and like the idea of a shotgun over a AR-15 for HD (we live in a ~1000sqft single story 1/1.5). I started wanting to get an 870, but after reading about what's going on with the Express line was having second thoughts. I was at Walmart a week or so ago checking for ammo(got the last 2 boxes of PDX1) and saw what I thought was an 870 for $179.99; looked closer and saw it was a Pardner Pump Protector. Had never heard of it, assumed it was junk and left. When I got home I googled Pardner Pump, and saw how mosy everyone who had one, loved it. Thought about it for 5 seconds, and for half the price of an 870 decided to go for it. Went back to Walmart maybe 2 hours later, and it was gone. Asked if they had any more, he checked and said nope, but they did have one with a 28" vent rib. I actually like the look of the vent rib, and figured out would be easy to cut down and install a tritium front bead. Took me another 5 seconds to decide to pull the trigger and get it, took maybe 10 minutes since I said I'll take it to him "escorting" me to my car, which is funny since it comes with the barrel off, and I had a .40 Glock on my ankle lol.

While I've only shot it 25 times, it feels nicer than any 870 Express I handled(to be fair I haven't shot an 870 though). I know people hate on it being made in China, it really doesn't bother me; same parent company owns H&R/NEF and Rem, and the same factory turned out some nice SKS', and I don't agree with paying more for something inferior simply because its made in the US.

I ordered a Knoxx NRS SpecOps stock and forearm, got it a couple days ago. I don't have a screwdriver that's long enough in Tampa with me, I'm going to make a trip back "home" to my dads in Boca to grab my tools, and maybe my big Craftsman tool chest now that I have room for it in our house, but then I might have to have my dad come back up with me or borrow his SUV and leave him my car because I'm not sure if the chest will fit in my car.

Next on the list is to cut the barrel down, the rib that will look right is ~19" and install a new front bead and big safety and maybe a Mesa 4 shell side saddle to be able to keep slings on the gun just in case. Then I want to get some kind of light, not sure what route I'll go with that though because I just can't see paying $400 for a SureFire, even though it looks like exactly what I want. I'll probably get a +1 mag extension before the light just because it's only $45 and the dimples should take all of 10 min to knock out; may polish some of the internals at the same time since I'll have my Dremel out. Once I figure out what type of sling I should go with I'll pick one up, same goes for getting a case. I ordered some shells online; first order already arrived with 5 packs of Federal Top Gun #8(got the pink ones, my mom died of cancer when I was 7. And I think they look BA), a few boxes of Winchester 3" #00 12 pellets, a 15 pack of Winchester 2-3/4" 1oz slugs; I placed the second order a few days ago; 20 PDX1 slugs, 25 2-3/4" buck and ball(the ones with a slug ball and 6 #1 pellets), 50 Winchester 2-3/4" #00, 20 Winchester 2-3/4" #1, a case (250 shells) of the cheap Rio 2-3/4 #00 and another case of the Federal Pink #8.

I'm completely sold on the Pardner Pump, and would buy a second one with out hesitation, and actually will be getting one for my dad since he too only has hand guns and it can't hurt to have a shot gun. I may pick up another one too just to have "in-stock." My girlfriends dad has an Auto-5 (Belgium made) he wants to get rid of for next to nothing because he only uses his SxSs and OUs so now that I'm hooked I want to pick it up and tactical her out; then as long as its somehow legally possible, building a converted Saiga 12 that hopefully I'll be able to send away $200 and make her a SBS.

I just realized how long this post is, sorry for the novel; I'm almost as excited as when my dad gave me his S&W 36, and also a little amazed that this sub $200 shotgun (including the shells currently loaded in it) is going to become my main HD gun; my Glock 20 still lives 24/7 in the top drawer of my nightstand, but I think I will be reaching behind the head board to grab the Pardner if the need ever arises.

Thanks.

It fits him perfectly and for how perfectly it fits his personality, I think it's funny that I had the name picked when I put the deposit down for pick of the litter, which was a few days before he was even conceived (at the time it was an easy pick, frank - frankfurter). I'm beyond happy I went with a dachshund, there really isn't another breed of dog that compares; picked him up at 8 weeks to the day a little over 2 years ago, and have had a better friend than I thought possible. When we move to a bigger house I'm going back to the same breeder (which was a 13 hour drive each way from our house) for a second.

/tangent over, although he actually is one of the most important features of my shotgun, he only barks when its someone he doesn't know walking up to his house(I have no idea how he knows, it doesn't matter if I know someone's coming over or not, he knows), and for a relatively small dog, he has a full size hound bark.

EDIT: I found a long flat head screwdriver, going to throw on the Knoxx furniture in the morning. It's killing me not cutting the barrel down, but know that waiting until I have a good setup with a vice and clamps is the only real option.

QUESTION: When I cut the barrel or grind the mag dimples off, or whatever that results in raw metal, what's the best product to use to refinish it? That cold blue stuff that's ~$10? Is any brand significantly better than the others?

To start, I am glad I am not the only one who thinks that the vent rib look is cool. I bought a pardner pump just like yours about a year ago. I cannot do the picture thing at the moment. But imagine if you will. I cut the barrel to about 19", that allowed me to end on a rib at the end of the barrel. I installed a Hi-Viz fiber optic vent rib front sight. I ground the dimples out of the magazine tube with my dremel and slicked up the action. Slicked up the magazine tube and used a Choate brand tube to make a magazine extension flush with the end of the barrel and it gives me 7+1 capacity. (Very similar to the type that MAX100, used to sell.) I cut the factory butt stock to 13" LOP, (I don't care for pistol grips on my shotgun), and added a piece of rail to the underside of the forend to attache my surefire pistol light to. I have done most of these modifications to my truck gun. That is an IAC Hawk 982.

For all of the exposed metal I do recommend the cold blue. It is super easy to apply and touch up if necessary. I have done it to both of the guns where needed. It is not anywhere near as good as one of the various Kote products. But great for a home gunsmith.

I use the Birchwood Casey cold blue, Walmart carries it. I prefer the super blue to the permablue. It does stain a bit deeper, and lasts longer.

Other than that, have fun with the project. I have had hours of enjoyment and really know my gun inside and out now. It is a great feeling.

Which extension did you get that works with the barrel cut to the first rib past 18" that makes it 7+1? I was just going to grab a cheap +1 cap, but if there's one that will make it hold 7 in the tube I'm all for it.
read my post about the 7+1 extension:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=293287&p=2613278#p2613278

the choate mag extension you need for the norinco 870 clone has OAL=3.5". this will give you the idea of where to cut your barrel. hope this help.

Yeah, it does look like its got a little A5 in it. I wish the back was more like the IAC version, but that's only for mounting a 870 style optic. It's a nice looking gun for $190 out the door, and it's a nice looking gun period. Aside from a Marine Magnum, I really can't see myself ever getting a 870 or Remington for that matter. But a M4 H2O would knock both a "normal" autoloader and a Ni shotgun off my list. Although I could probably get an 870MM and a 11-87 for less than that M4 would cost lol.

I almost want to pick up another 28" Pardner just because I can't see them staying $200 that much longer; maybe keep the barrel at ~24", put on a +4 extension, and keep it loaded with slugs. But even if I do end up grabbing another it wouldn't get any money thrown at it until I'm completely finished with this HD build. And I still want to get a Glock 30 (if I'm only going to be able to have a 10 round mag, why not be 10 rounds of 10mm lol), but I'll admit the G30 is rather low on the list.

Maybe it's just a bit of irony here regarding the Pardner Pump. It's basically a ripoff/clone of the Remington 870 and we all know that. But according to talk on Remington shotguns I've heard the humpbacked Browning A5/Remington Model 11 was streamlined into the Model 48, which was redesigned into the Remington 1100, which was the basis for the Remington 870 prototype and features 80% parts commonality. If that's rue then here comes the Pardner Pump 870 clone that features the humpback design of John Browning who started it all.

Glad i'm not the only one...

Recently picked up the Pardner Protector and I liked it so much I swapped out the wood on my 23 year old dinged up 870 too. The Protector doesn't have the vent rib barrel which I found curious but then again its a very heavy 870 copy already so maybe that's a good thing and probably the biggest reason I'll pass on the mag extension. It works great and I can't find anything to complain about and its drilled/tapped for optics too :!:

I find it hard to knock a firearm unless I own one and I'm glad to say I can't knock these heathen chinee shotguns. Gonna have to try a Mex/Tex Maverick 88 next.

If I get another pump that isn't an 870 Police Marine Magnum, its going to be another Pardner. With how good it is for $200 I'm not going to gamble on an 88, along with having to learn another type of pump shotgun. When I find a gun I like I stick with it(like Glocks lol, once I get a subcompact 10mm I'm going to start working on the midsize, in this order 10mm, .40, 9mm, .357. Slightly addicted is an understatement).

I checked the price on auto loaders a little earlier and umm wow. I wish I had a time machine to go back and buy a Saiga (not to mention every AR I could find, but that's a different story), Versa-Max MSRP of ~$1300...Saiga is looking like a not bad option now if that's what a "normal" semi costs.

Knoxx Power Pack, good deal or pass? I'm thinking it might be something worth getting; I like the cheek riser thing, and I want a side saddle so it holding 5 shells is a plus (and that tube for junk too...), and being $25 doesn't hurt it either. Maybe kill two birds with one stone so I won't have to get a Mesa side saddle, or at least not so soon.

[The following is a total tangent about the possibility of buying an old Auto 5 and converting it to a tactical HD gun]

I'm really excited about getting the Pardner a friend :) I'm going this weekend to get the Auto-5 (just a basic A5, but in good-verygood shape) my girlfriends dad wants to unload. He doesn't want it at all and says the only thing it's good for is taking up a space in the safe a SxS or OU should be in, he said I can have it for free if I want it but I'm going to give him something just because I don't want to take it for nothing, it wouldn't ever feel like it's "mine." Say what you will about how I'm "ruining" a classic or whatever. I like modern black guns and technology. I'm not into strapping on needless junk but I'm also not into the whole KISS thing; I don't want a breaching choke with a pistol grip only, but I'm not against flashlights or optics or whatever. And aside from me looking at it a little while ago it hasn't been taken out of his safe, let alone it's case for many, many years; I think the gun gods would rather me modify it and shoot it all the time, guns shouldn't live in a safe. Only plan to shoot buck and some slugs at the range, no low brass bird/target loads; HD load will probably be Winchester DoubleX #00 in the tube and PDX1 segmented slugs on the side saddle. There's a chance it might live on my girlfriend's side of the bed if she wants something bigger than a Glock 26, in which case I'll probably load it Federal reduced recoil #00 and just have it set up to cycle it well and order a few cases of that Rio low recoil #00 for range work so it can keep the same recoil settings for range and HD.

Long term plan is, and not necessarily in this order: cut the barrel as short as can be reliable (hopefully 20" to 22", but not going to make it unreliable), get the longest mag extension that's reliable to run since it can't be clamped to the barrel, ideally figure out a way to fit an adjustable M4 style stock (Spec Ops or whatever) or a short LOP synthetic(again, with pistol grip, if possible), and in addition cut the wood stock down a good amount and put on a limb saver to have a standard stock, fit a 4-8 shot side saddle, install a tritium rifle sights, black it all out but not sure the best way to do this yet, and will figure out a clean mount for a light.

Looks good.

I chopped my barrel down to ~21", since this was my first time cutting a barrel down I cut it one rib longer than 19" so I could try once before the final cut. Did it freehand with a hacksaw and a pos blade, then smoothed it out with a flat, round, and finishing file. For the next cut I'm for sure going to use a hose clamp and get a nice blade; the cut came out good enough, but I want it better.

I know what you mean. Nobody wants the muzzle of their shotgun to look like it could be used to skewer somebody.

Yep. I almost wish I had just cut at the 19" rib because five more minutes with a flat file then finishing it up would have it perfect, but it was relatively easy to cut so not that big of a deal. I was having second thoughts about not getting the 18" Protector, but now after cutting it I'm glad I went with the 28" vent rib: now I can install a +2 and I really like having the vent rib..

I had read here that a 3.25" extension will be the right length for the barrel and hold 7+1 with a short follower. Multiple people say if you take the spring retainer out the stock tube will hold 6 shells, so the extension doesn't have to be a "full" +2 I guess.

I'm going to double check all the measurements before I order anything, it isn't the end of the world if I can only fit 6+1, but having eshells loaded up would be nice.
