I have never used a gut hook to remove some of the entrails in the field. Do many of you use this on the birds you take, or do you wait unitl you're back home to gut the birds?

I breast the ducks and geese that I kill, and the few that I pluck get split down the spine and all the extras are emptied out that way.

I have used a gut hook to open the body cavity of a deer, worked great.

There is a fine line between a hobby and insanity.

I skin and gut the birds at home or as soon as I am near a hose. I have never used a guthook on a bird. I use a sharp knife and a set of garden shears. Skin em, clip the wings and lowwer legs off, gut um. Then the best part!

Cook and eat the little guys

As for myself, I use a gut hook on my bird knife all the time when I shoot something. I found that pellets, when pentrating the body cavity puncher the organs and that can taint the meat. Also I use a sharp stick, stick it into the body cavity, twist the stick afew times and yank it out, majority of the inners come out of the birds nicely. I try not to leave organs in my bird for any longer than I have too. Another way to breast out a bird in a hurry is; lay the bird on its back on the ground, put a foot on each wing, grab the legs and pull, breasts and such come right out.

Howie, I just received my remington upland bird knife purchased from cabela's in the mail today. It has a nice blade, a gut hook, and a choke wrench for 12 and 20 ga.

I've had a few birds get skunky in the past...threw away some chukars recently. Really ticked me off....So, I plan to use the gut hook in the field and pull out the entrals.

Planning on keeping the heart, gizzard and liver though in a zip lock bag.

This actually looks better than what I got as it includes a game shears:
