:roll:I"m at sticker shock looking at the prices for rifled slug barrels for 870 remingtons,I paid $175.00 for the whole gun used about 3 years ago,monte-carlo stock, smoothbore deer barrel in great shape, I find it hard to justify $225.00 for the rifled barrel!! I want a slug barrel with rifle sights so I can mount
a scope on the reciever,I like to sit in the treestand the first
morning then be able to remove the scope for deer drive's.
So my question is what is everyone else doing, is it worth the investment, or a newer gun? The Ithaca Deerslayer II is something I might be interested in, just never held one, nevermind the price!
Thanks, Marc

For the money, I would buy a separeate slug gun. You can get a Marlin 512 (bolt action with 3 round capacity) for about $275. The best thing about the 512 is that it is fully rifled and is designed for shooting slugs so it holds like a rifle. Easier on the shoulder than most barrel exchange slug guns. I had a cantileivered barrel for an 1100 and it never shot well, even with a scope that nearly equaled the price of the barrel. I got the 512 and have smacked deer at 130 steps. They have iron sights too. Also have small ports in the barrel that cut recoil but are not hard on the ears like most.

Good luck

If you want try putting a rifled choke in your shot barrel. They are pretty accurate. My father used his 870 like that for years. It shot great. I seen him kill several deer at 100yds. Of course you would have to see where your gun hits with the bead. Or Remington sells a Rifled slug barrel with rifled sights alot cheaper that Hastings does. Try E-bay or www.cheaperthandirt.com You can find the barrel you want for cheaper that 225.00.

I bought a Hastings Paradox rifled barrel with cantilever scope mount, NIB, for $145 on ebay. Try a search and see if there's more out there. I'll be trying the new barrel out this weekend. I'll post results with different ammo I've picked up.

It is a little unrealistic to compare used gun prices to new barrels and think the barrel is overpriced. Try eBay. I have a Hastings on an 870 and get 4" groups at 100yds with sabot slugs.
