I just purchases an old Loomis double bareled shotgun off of a friend. Its a no. 48, of which i can not find any information off of. Can anyone help??? Im looking for a value, how rare it may be, and a history lesson. It has some nice markings on it. Shouldnt be hard to identify if you know about these things, which i dont.
Hello,F.A. Loomis 12ga hammergun showed up today. Google turns up little or nothing. Made between 1875-1887 based on the "Not for Ball" and 12B/15M proof marks. Anyone have information on Loomis? I'll try to get some pics in the next couple of days.

F.A. Loomis was probably a H&D Folsom tradename; for both Birmingham and Belgian made imports
The proof marks date to 1887-1896.
The R bore was proved at 14b = .693 and L at 13b = .710
You will need a bore gauge and wall thickness gauge to determine if the barrels have been honed.
It was not a high quality double when new, has been neglected, worked upon by someone who buggered the screws, and it is now about 130 years old; with damascus barrels. The R hammer screw has been replaced.
Its value is as a wall hanger until a double gun specialist with the interest, equipment and expertise to properly do so has evaluated the gun.
