help on difference between beretta 391 teknys and 391 urika

I am looking to buy a 391 field gun- teknys or urika optima. I have asked 4 people about these 2 guns and have received 4 different answers. The teknys is getting harder to come by so I looked into the Urika. As far as I can tell, the only difference is in the wood.

Can someone tell me if there are other differences between the two? As far as I can tell, they both have the same action, same barrel, same chokes. But does the Urika have the same recoil dampening devices, etc...? Does anyone have advise/experience on either gun?

I'm looking to do periodic bird hunting and more frequent clay shooting.

I would like to find out also.
I am shopping the same two guns, and a Benelli Sport II.
Cougar888, have you looked at the Sport II?

Tough choices on this, the teknys is a couple hundred more than the Urika Optima Gold Sporting, (1000.00 if you shop)
and the Benelli Sport II you can get off the net for (about 1175),
which is about the price of the Teknys, (abt. 1300?)
The Benelli Sport II has more (I think) features, and the Cryo
Barrell and chokes.

Man, tough choices.

Don't buy the benelli just because of the cryo. You can get your gun cryo treated here for like 75$ www.300below.com
to answer your other question call Beretta (800) 636-3420

A cryo barrel on shotgun---huh???

Maybe an advantage on a rifle---BIG maybe-----but no use on a ******.

For a field gun--I'd get the Urika----I was under the impression the Teknys(sp?) was more of a sporting gun.

The lesser wood of the Urika won't hurt as much when it gets scratched---new improved choke system----and less money to boot.

I called Beretta today, and talked to customer service, (1-800-636-34200 very knowledgable guy, no B.S. guy, and he said there were absolutly no differance in any of the AL391's except asthetics, (and the stock on the "Parallel Target" model.)
So, a AL391 sporting is 200 less than the AL391 sporting gold, and that one is 200 less than the Tekneys (wierd name)
All the same stuff inside, as long as you get a new 2003 model, with the Optima choke, not the older MCS choke.

Now......Al391 Sporting, or Benelli Sport II?????

Dam man, MAKE UP YOUR MIND!!!!!

Well, I went to the shop today and figured if I compared them side by side, held and mounted them, I could easily decide. WRONG. It was a tough choice.

After talking to 4 people at the store, the conclusion I have is that the guns I compared- teknys and urika are the SAME mechanically, but slightly different astetically (sp). The urika seemed slightly heavier (in ounces). I bout bought the urika, then at the last minute chose the teknys (field). The calculation of $100 extra dollars over the 40 years I hope to get out of it kicked in with the "I want to be different" logic. For some reason I was thinking the optima chokes were extended outside the barrel. Turns out they are flush with the barrel. No problem, just a surprise.

I hope to break this thing in tomorrow at the range and then goose fetching next Friday. I'll reprt my findings.

I did not consider Sport II. I guess I just had Beretta on the brain. Also, I expect Benelli to be more $$ than Beretta (kinda like cadillac and Chevy). I could be wrong, but that's what I did.

Now, anyone that has a 391 know what ammo and choke combinations work best? Also, is the skeet choke worth it?

Welcome to the club, fellow Teknys owner.

Regarding the chokes, the Modified Choke that comes as a default choke already in the barrel is flush, but all the other chokes (i.e. Full, IM, IC, and C) that come with the gun are extended - at least they were with my Teknys.

I understand your point about trying to be different. There are many, many 391's out there, a testiment to its quality and value, but only a handful of Teknys.

Be careful with your barrel site. Mine seemed to have fallen or broken off. No big deal to replace or upgrade.

If you need/want to remove your magazine limiter for your 391, there's already a thread on this site to assist you.

Good Luck

I'll be picking up my Teknys in 20ga this week. Hope all goes well with it, but I imagine it will. My girl and I are going to 20ga for nearly 100% of our shooting. I'm going to have my Citori tubed for .410 and 28 so I can shoot all the skeet games but that'll be it.

I went to Cabella's in Dundee, Mi. this weekend to look,
and my favorite to "feel" good mounted was the Benelli Legacy, but for looks, 'ol holy mackinaw, the Tekneys was IT
The wood, select walnut with a gloss oil finish was fantastic, I sure don't understand why more guns don't come with this finish, the Urika Gold Sporting paled in compairson, not only the finish, but the floor model had several small dents in it, and feathered around the dents, and ofcourse very little could be done to fix this, whereas oil finish would not feather like this, and a fresh coat of oil would take care of a lot of sin.

I would have bought the Benelli Legacy on the spot if it had the wood the tekneys had, as it is, I am still thinking.
I am not too worried about the fit, I
think/hope that with a little spacer use, I will get the Tekneys to fit like the benelli, and I wrote down all the features of my top 5 choices, the Tekneys came out far and away on top.
I was hoping to see the Beretta Soprt II, but they didn't have one, no one seems to, too bad for Benelli, thats not a good way to sell guns, set up "exclusive" dealers with protected territories, and than, i guess, hope they sell the product out of a book. Reminds me of when I was a kid, and sold Mason shoes out of a catalog, but then they weren't 1300.00 :?
