I'm helping somebody figure out how get a Remington 1100 unstuck but couldn't seem to get it to open.

The problem:
A spent shell being used as a snap-cap (the crimped area has been cut off) was inserted into the chamber and the action was closed.
The trigger was pulled to release the pressure on the firing pin.
With the snap cap still in the chamber, the fore-end was removed. Then the user tried to pull the bolt back to open the action. Now the snap cap is stuck inside the chamber and the action cannot be opened. The bolt only moves back about half an inch and would go no further.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Derek
