I have a used Western Field (mossberg) model 500 with c-lect choke and vent rib. After patterning at 40 yards, it centers the pattern about 12 inches high. It is very frustrating to hit trap with. I have tried wedging a shim under the front bead with some success. But, there has got to be a better fix for this inexpensive bird gun.

I have always assessed my shotguns ability to kill birds by busting a few clay pigeons with a hand thrown trap. With the rest of my shotguns I can hit both clay pigeons and live birds with the same "sight" picture. I can't hit anything with this 20 g.

Hi there Kraz!

If you don't want to learn to shoot it like it is, fooling arround with the "sight" isn't going to do you any good either! What you need to do is lower your head/eye/cheek on the stock so you are looking down the barrel more flat/straight. Cutting some off the comb of the stock or changing the pitch of your stock will both accomplish this. This will get your pattern back down down where YOU want it! The higher your eye, the higher the point of impact! The inverse is also true, and that is what you are wanting?? How you accomplish this is your call!

A couple of quick and easy tricks. Easiest is to add a recoil pad. One of the slip on ones will do, even if you already have a pad on it. This will lengthen the gun and drop your eye further back on the comb. This will lower the sight picture. Another trick would be to add a shim to the upper here the stock and the reciever meet. a piece of shotgun shell would be the thickness to try. Lastly, you could sand the comb down a little at a time until it shot where you wanted it.
