Yeah, I'm always hittin' the wrong nail myself. Thumb nail... wall... nail head... thumb nail... wall... wall... you get the idea.

I'm a lightning carpenter. I never strike the same place twice.

I'm a pretty fair "nailer" but I've hit the knuckles on my thumb and index fingers of both hands more times than I can count. It hurts more every time too....ughhh.....

My main hammer is an Eastwing 22 ouncer. I don't really care for anything lighter. It started life as a waffle head but is so smooth now you can't really tell it was a waffle at one time.

Eastwings last forever.

I alternately use a Vaughan 19oz (or is it 21?) fiberglass-handled hammer or a Stiletto 14oz Ti head woody. A gun (nail, that is) is not for something a bigger hammer would accomplish. It's for doing things that a) a hammer could do, but the gun can do much faster and b) things a hammer just ain't gonna do, like crazy toenails. If you need to move something, like a beam, wall or post (or anything else), there's no substitute for hammerhead mass. That's the only thing I don't like about the 14ozer. It's nice to carry but I can't hit as hard with it as I can the 19 (21?), which also has more weight because of the fiberglass handle. It's fine for nails, but you can't move stuff with it.

You are a star - thank you for your kind offer - but - I am past knocking nails in anything - I am in the process of binning all my tools including most of my hammers - the only thing I am going to knock is to knock back a glass of whisky - retirement has taken me a few years to get used to but I have finally accepted it. I will let someone else do the knocking for me.

In all honesty your hammer probably will if you don't lose it.

Mine has been used very heavily since I bought it. I did concrete for two years, helped frame a couple houses, and then used it for a summer building fence. It wasn't just used to pound nails either. I've grossly violated the warning sticker that it came with. I've used it to beat, pry, pound, clobber, break, hack, chop, hold, and destroy things that no hammer was ever supposed to do and it's held up admirably. In fact I'd say it's merely "broken in" at this point.

Estwings (sorry for misspelling it earlier) are something that could probably be handed down to the next generation, even if HEAVILY used.
