Is it legal to purchase and mount a folding stock on a shotgun? I would like to put a folding stock on my mossberg but I am not sure if this would be legal.

That depends on where you live. I know for a fact you can't do it here in CA. It makes it an "assault" rifle. right. I'm not too sure about other states. You could probably find out by visiting your local gun shop. If you can't get a folding stock, the pistol grip stocks are pretty sick looking.

In most every state (Other than CA), it is perfectly legal to put a folder on a pump action shotgun.

There are no federal laws addressing pump action weapons and their cosmetics.

Only one way of finding out. Contact your local police/sherriff department, CHP, or the state agency that regulates firearms.

Dealers are poor sources of legal information (so, for that matter, are Internet message boards). The DoJ has them running scared and as far as they are concerned everything is illegal.

A better source of information is John Machtinger's How to Own a Gun and Stay Out of Jail in California, which every California gun owner should have on his bookshelf.

A semi-automatic shotgun with both a folding or collapsible stock and a pistol grip would run afoul of the California assault weapon ban. Pump shotguns are not covered by the ban.

The only requirement for pump shotguns is that they must have a barrel length of at least 18" and an overall length of no less than 26" with the stock folded.

Don't take it from me, though, buy Machtinger's book (available at most gun stores).

Read the AWB for the full story but if memory serves correctly:

No folding stocks for autos
No extended mag tubes for autos with pistol grip stocks, cannot have both high capacity and pistol grip stock together... blah... blah... blah.

Pumps are exempt from the lot. You can have bayonets, pistol grips, high cap & pistol grip etc. unless the state where you reside has stricter legislation.

Don't call the police as they don't know much about it. Call the ATF, they will answer your questions correctly.

So...folding stocks are legal on pumps...sweet : )

thanks

I already have a pistol grip on my mossberg 500 but a folding stock will be a welcome addition.
