I have come across what appears to be a 16 Ga, side by side
Says:
J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company
Chicopee Falls, Mass
Pat D March 19, 1902

Would you expect a serial number on this shotgun? If so, where? I can't find one...............

No I wouldn't. Savage/Stevens barely started putting serial numbers on guns when required to by fed law in '68.

if you saw this gun in lex. ok you might notice a 335
in 1864 it was j.stevens then in 1881 changed to j. stevens arms and tool 1920 it was taken over by savage that is a slick piece
