The Nitro Special was a Lefever Arms Co. gun, which was owned and operated by Ithaca. Ithaca bought Lefever in 1916.

I believe the Nitro Special was introduced in 1921 in 12, 16, and 20 gauges. A .410 cal was introduced in 1926.

Reffered to as Model 1: the original Lefever Nitro Special Double, produced from 1921-1947 with a halt during the war. Its
estimated that 340,000 Nitro Specials were produced. Original sale price was $29.00!

Sorry I can't be more specific.

BTW, the folks at the Double Gun BBS know a fair amount about the Lefever's. Check here

I have a Lefever nitro special s/n 349650, 12 ga.double, and wouldn't sell or trade it for anything. Nice heavy gun well made ,had a barrel dent removed and good as new, even the smithy liked it,and was amazed at the tight patterns. I guess it wasn't fired all that much. Love IT! Great gun to pass on, That's how I got mine. Cabelas is selling one for $1,000 right now. Joe
Thanks for dredging up a 5 and a half year old thread...
Sounds like sour grapes to me pal, You must have gotten rid of it cheap, well, go buy the one at Cabelas web site. Good hunting grouchy.
No, I don't own one... nor do I want one. My point was that prior to your post, the last post was Wed May 07, 2003. It's considered bad netiquette to dredge up really old threads.
Point taken, I'll have to be more careful. I was just browsing and commenting on things I am familiar with, the least of them being etiquette. You have a nice day Pal. Joe
There re instructions in the headers to search the archives before posting. I think that neans to help gain info on your gun, rather than instructing you to post on the tail end of an old thread.. It could be confusing to a new poster.. Bushrod
