Specifically looking at either a browning gold deer hunter or a Winchester Super X2, but would also look at another gun as well. I need to make this decision rather quickly since it will be time to head out into the woods soon.

Price is not a major issue, I'd like to buy a good gun and would be willing to spend around 1,000 for a new slug gun.

Those little Browning Golds are great guns. Their gas system is very simple and easy to clean.

I'm also a big fan of the H&R Ultra Slug Hunter.

Good Luck

RA1A - there are so many choices out there. Both the Brn. and the X2 with fully rifled cantalivered barrels are great choices for sabots and 100+ yards. The 11-87 slug gun with a fully rifled cantalivered barrel is another good choice. So is an 870 with a similar set-up. So is a Brn. pump.

Were you looking for a semiauto exclusively -or- would you considering a pump, bolt, or single shot? Semis seem to be good at some recoil reduction...but with a slug you're going to get a pretty good kick no matter what I think.

At range this past weekend, we had our annual "sight-in days". Saw all kinds of slug guns. I saw smooth bores with open sights put 3-5 shots in less than 3" at 50 yards. I also saw guns that were accurate out to 100 yards. Three that kept proving their mettle were:
  • The 870 (in a range of models and ages...)
The X2 with a fully rifled cantalivered barrel
The Brn pump with a fully rifled cantalivered barrel.

The 870 was particularly impressive in how many that came through...and how many of those were real shooters.

I just purchased a Browning Gold Deer Stalker. I had a BPS with a rifled Hastings barrel that I could not get to give me a good group, 8" groups at 50 yards. I decided to leave that gun for waterfowl and purchased the Gold. I sighted the Gold in yesterday and was extremely happy with the results. I had the gun bore sighted and within 3 shots I was shooting sub 1" groups at 50 yards. I would recommend the Browning Gold. I have some friends that own older Remington 11-87s that shoot very good groups as well. I have seen some poorly made 870s lately and would stay away from them.

The difficult decision will be whether to buy the 12 ga. or the 20 ga.
You'll find numerous posts on them in the H&R/NEF Forum.

No need to spend a $1,000.
But if you feel compelled to, then buy them both, and top each of them off with a quality scope.

Chances are you'll still get some change back!

I'm with A5guy. The Gold and SX2 are very good guns. A dedicated slug gun would be better if that is all it will be used for. The Mossberg 695 is also a good shooting gun. The A-Bolt and TarHunt have better quality hence their higher price.

I've got a Rem 1187 with cant. mount and rifled barrel in 12 ga and a T/C Encore in 20 ga. Both are awesome in taking deer.

The others mentioned are all good choices too.

Have you handled a Mossberg SSi-One slug gun? It's a lot of gun for under $300. Mine is topped with a Leupold 2x7 VX-1, and I get one ragged hole at 50 yards with Winchester BRI sabots. It's a bit on the heavy side (but you really don't want to be shooting slugs out of any gun that's light) but very well balanced and points and swings like a nice double. At first glance, many confuse it for a Safari grade Ruger Number 1. I can't think of another slug gun that's fully rifled, ported, has a walnut stock with cut checkering, and can be had for under $300. You can also buy additional interchangeable barrels in a whole host of calibers ranging from bull varmint barrels in .22-250 to sporter models in 30-06.
