Does anyone make their own bismuth shot, or lead shot? I've been looking at the littleton machine and emailed them to see if it can make larger sizes then 6. Are there any other machines out there?

Also if you do make your own bismuth, where do you get your tin and bismuth from?

Thanks

LWS,

Bismuth is a metal that is a little lighter then lead but is non-toxic, allowing you to shoot at ducks and geese with it, it also allows you to shoot vintage shotuns that cannot accept steel. Usually pure bismuth is alloyed with tin to make it less brittle.

So no one makes their own shot?
Oh well I'll just have to wait for the littleton folks to respond to me email

ABH,

It will be interesting to hear how easy or difficult it is to make your own shot, but working and smelting molten metals is often extremely dangerous. I'm not an engineer nor chemist, although I have studied both.

Will you let us know the low-down when you can?

In a depression or emergency scenario, I suppose the best source of "lead pellets" or similar projectiles would be to cut really small diameter lead wire into very, very small segments and reload them like very small lead cubes.

I know that during WWII guerillas in the Phillipines fighting the invader resorted to making bullets from curtain rods - until they captured and confescated enough weapons and ammo to forego those inconveniences. Hopefully we'll never have to live through another depression ourselves, and be forced to make-do with inferior reloading components.

ABHunter,
I, for one, have never talked to anyone in the shooting world who hasn't heard of bismuth...or heavi-shot for that matter. And I really don't care what his wife is doing either.
Anyway, I just emailed the littleton folks with the same question. Then I found your post. Have you found anywhere that sells bulk bismuth or heavi-shot? Please let us know if you find out. Thanks.

I talked with Littleton and they said neither bismuth, nor heavi-shot would work with the Littleton Shot Maker.

bones_can, you're right. I looked at the website and then looked back at the email I received from Littleton. They said heavi-shot would not work because it has tungsten in it. They didn't say anything about bismuth, so I emailed them again. I thought I asked them about both, but I was wrong. Sorry for the mixup.

I picked an article off the internet that gave instructions for making your own bismuth shot. I haven't read the article in several months but recall that it used a home shot maker made in Australia. The article is obviously from some Austrialian publication.

I still have a copy of the article and would be happy to share it. It is in Word format and quite large, 1MB, because of some pictures.

I will email it to anyone who wants it. Make sure your email can handle the load. If this site can host the file, I can do that also. Somebody will have to point me in the right direction, however as I rarely visit this site and don't really know my way around.

Or-- if someone has a site that can host the file that can work as well.

You can contact me at [email protected] remove the x for the correct address.

Terry you have mail,

The Littleton guys got back to me and said you would need temperature control or else it would be too hot. I haven't read Terry's article but I have heard of people in the UK mixing 3-6% tin to keep it less brittle. They also said that #2s were out of the machines range but number 4s would probably be possible.

When I looked for bismuth on the web it was all pretty expensive because its meant for science experiments but I'll keep looking.

You can buy bulk bis for cheap at RotoMetals.com. I have not tried to make the shot as of yet but I am thinking serously about it, due to the price of shells today. I know you can cast them in different casts from 00 to #10 BB, it casts similar to lead shot. Hope that helps someone in the future.
