My brother and I each have a Mauser '98 12 gauge shotgun. He has gone to extensive lengths to sporterize his and it is a beautiful, accurate gun. I purchased mine at a local gun show for $50 with the intent to do the same, however, we had done some research and discovered weaknesses in the conversion.As mentioned in the article Mars posted, the front of the bolt face has been modified extensively to accept the head diameter of a 12 gauge shotshell. Thus removing much of the locking lugs. We have since retired ours. His (the finished one) has a distinguished place in the gun cabinet. Mine (the unfinished one) sits in a corner.
