Metal Restoration

I am restoring a very old Cogswell & Harrison pinfire side by side. The metal and engraving are in excellent condition. I was wondering what would be the best way to clean the metal parts prior to case coloring. Any suggestions or publications would be appreciated

Raindog,
If there a true casehardened finish on the receiver now only abrisives will remove it, if there is a bluing or browning on it standard NAVAL JELLY is the ticket.
