Greetings all,

Recently I obtained a fairly old shotgun from my grandfather and I can't seem to find any markings on it that would hint to a type of manufacturer or how old it actually is. There is a stamped C on the right barrel, and a stamped V on the underside of the stock. I was told by him that it was a shotgun passed down to him and that it dates back to the mid 19th century. It is a muzzle loaded black powder double barrel complete with a hickory ramrod mounded below the two barrels. The stock was carved by hand which includes a deer head design on the underside of the stock. I was curious as to what country of origin this shotgun came from (I'm guessing United States), as well as any possible manufactures that would have constructed it and what it might be worth. Also I am wondering what type of wood the stock is carved out of.

The stock has a bit of dings in it most likely due to the usage it went though back in the day when it was operational, and the barrel has a few rust spots on it. I would like to touch the gun up a bit in the future so that I may be able to preserve it a bit better than I was kept before.

I have pictures attached below.

Thanks!

So the inspectors marks confirms that it is very possibly a mid 19th century shotgun. Interesting.

After doing some more research on Damascus-Barrels, the JP trademark stands for the makers name of Pirotte J and Fils. Ill be sure to look more into the forums and websites you have provided me with!

Hopefully ill be able to find out more things about this interesting firearm.

Thanks !

Nice looking old gun with back-action locks. The proof marks appear to be Belgian, and it does have a "Nock's Patent Breech" and wedges for ease of disassembly. From what I can see in the pictures, even the nipples look serviceable.

Just use a little 0000 steel wool and oil (like 3-in-1) to clean up the light rust (NOT "stainless steel" wool - it is too harsh). I wouldn't reblue it - that destroys any value. If you can, check out the bore for pitting. You just want to restore it, not refinish it.

A few years back, I knew guys that used black powder with the old guns after a gun smith had checked them out. (I did, too, but with a modern replica 14 ga. SXS.)
