I am a new hunter, and my grand dad left me a mossberg 500A pump shotgun. how is this gun as a deer gun? and what slug should I use? Can't use a rifle in New York.

I have had excellent luck with a 2 3/4 inch Remington Slugger in the standard velocity version with a modified choke tube out of my 500a. You may also want to try an improved cylinder choke tube. I can shoot 1 inch groups at 40 yards from a sitting position with this gun/ammo combination.

Masterblaster, you don't say what barrel your using? I assume it's a 28"?
