First off, will the barrel even fit my mav 88?
I am planning on buying a 9 shot 20" barrel for my maverick 88. I need to either get an extension or a replacement magazine tube from a Mossberg 590 for my Maverick 88. Has anyone done this? I believe it should work because the 590 and 500 parts should be interchangeable with maverick 88. Where can I find this mag tube or extension?

I also have a question along these lines. I have a Mossberg 500 with the 28" barrel and the 5 shot magazine. Is it possible to mount a shorter 590 barrel with a 590 magazine with increased capacity (9shot)?

The barrel will work with the correct mag tube. However, for the cash involved, you might be better off buying the shotgun you want, instead busting your tail to change this one so drastically.

Browmnells will give you the M-500 parts:

631-000-314 Barrel, 20", 8-Shot, Rifle Sights, Blue
$140.71

Or:
631-000-330 Barrel, 20", Blue
$84.83

Then add:
631-000-328 Magazine Tube, 8-Shot
$38.43
631-000-335 Mag Spring, 8-Shot
$2.88

Minum: $126.14

Or you could buy a second Maverick for: $184 all day on Gun Broker

You can't get the 590 20" barrels from Brownells website, if you could the retail for closer to $91 and require the addition of a mag tube cap, so call it $100 and change.

Bottom line for me is swaping between the two sizes is more more touble then the "advantage" that you get. If you have a 5+1 Mossy/Maverick, get a 18" barrel. If you want the 20" gun then just get one.

Thanks for the quick responses! It sounds like my best bet would be to get the 18.5" barrel for my 500 and then just switch back and forth for Home defense or hunting, keeping the 5 shot capacity.

You might find an eBay deal on a 20" barrel and mag tube combo. I did, last year. I've got an older (but "post-K850-") 500A that came with the 18½" barrel.
The new barrel has a finish closer to what I'd like the receiver and everything to eventually be. Also has better sights than the stock bead-no-rear, but I'm thinking of putting a Mossberg MX500 set on it anyway.
