Mossberg 835 FTF,Why is the shell stop so soft?

Yes,the old pump did.After examination it was determined that the action bar peened the shell stop to the point that it failed to release a shell.No wear on the action bar.So I filed on it and works again,although I am replacing it.Is there some way to prevent this or is it the sacrificial surface in the design?
