There have been a few questions as to whether one can get a 18.5" cylinder bore barrel to turn an 835 into a tactical shotgun. I had an 835 and just traded it for a tactical 500 because I thought you could not get this type of barrel for an 835. Well I just got the following email from Roger Montalvo at Maverick Arms:

Thank you for your e-mail. We apologize for the delay in answering your e-mail. We have the following barrel available for the model 835:

Item # Description Price
12946 835 12 ga 18 1/2" Cylinder Bore w/bead sight, blue finish $100.00

Since this is a barrel that we do not get asked for frequently, it may take us some time to get this barrel for you. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact us directly at 1-800-363-3555, ext 541.

Thanks

So if you have an 835 and want a short cylinder bore barrel, you can get one from Maverick Arms.

Here is my 835 with an 18.5" barrel:

mic214, the first picture of your 835 looks just like one of my 835's, an all black one still with the sporting forend, but I have not yet replaced an overly long +4 extension with a +2 extension like yours. I now wish that I had thought of buying an 18.5" 590A1 barrel instead of the 835 security barrel, because I paid alot for Accu-Mag chokes, whereas I did not realize that the 18.5" 590A1 barrels can be ordered with Accu-Chokes for just $117. (Of course, the 20" 590A1 barrels will not work and I would not have shot 3.5" shells.) Again, nice pictures, sir. And welcome to the Basement, razor78016!

Thanks for finding this information about the Maverick 835 barrels!

One Question: is the Maverick Arms barrel mentioned in the OG an Overbore (.775) barrel or a Standard 12 Gauge Bore (.731)?

I've been looking for a way to build a tactical all purpose shotgun with maximum ammo compatibility. While I'd looked at the 590A1, it fell short by not being able to take the 3.5" shells. Not that I'd want to shoot them, but if Zombies took over, and I was raiding an abandoned gunshop in some town, I'd want my 12 Gauge to be as light and maneuverable as possible while still being very tough and and able to fire whatever size ammo I found.

Thanks again.

You can buy 18.5" barrels for the 835 directly from Mossberg. All you have to do is call them and ask for it. Mine cost $100. It's a nice heavy cylinder bore barrel, and it's not over-bored so you can shoot slugs too. In fact, with the 3.5" chamber it'll shoot any 12-gauge ammo.

Here's a thread from a while ago: Tacticooling a Mossberg 835 Ultra-Mag

My tactical 835. Installed are a TruGlo Reddot 2X scope, pressure switch lazer, Insight tactical light, 6 shot saddle and an AR 590 Kit. The 590 butt fits out of the box but the foregrip had to be honed and the top shaved to fit. I also had to fabricate the piece in front of the grip to keep everything tight. I will be installing an 18.5 barrel with heatshield, mag extension and night vision. Why? Whynot. If I don't spend my money my Wife and Kids do. I love to modify guns and the mossberg is a rugged and easily modified gun.

Just placed an order from Mossberg (9/9/11).

The 835 18.5 CLY BORE BEAD SIGHT BLUE the part number is 90823. This costs $110 + $10.85 shipping.

HOWEVER, if you are not a dealer and do not care about the hard plastic packaging, you can request to not have the packaging and get it for $90 + $8.95 shipping. The plastic packaging I'm mentioning is for dealers to hang in the store and resell (you or I would just throw it away). You should still give them the 90823 part number for reference.

Mossberg's phone number is 1-800-363-3555.

Oh by the way, this is not left over product from when they used to make these. The rep told me that they have always offered them just not on their site for some reason. In fact, they were not in stock when I placed my order and they are custom making it for me which will delay it by 7-10 business days.

... To order an 18.5" cylinder bore barrel, the following barrel is available from Maverick Arms for the 835: Item #12946, 18.5" cylinder bore w/bead sight, blue finish $100.00. The #12946 is a true cylinder bore, smoothbore barrel, NOT AN OVERBORED BARREL, and both slugs and shotshells (2.75", 3", and 3.5") can be fired through it. The #12946 can be ordered parkerized for $20 extra. (Barrel #12946 is the same as #90823, which is the part number of this barrel when it is sold to stores in clamshell packaging.) Mossberg does not advertise these on their site. Since this is a barrel that they do not get asked for frequently, it may take them some time to get this barrel for you.
