Is your A5 a 3" Magnum? If so it will not cycle with 2 3/3" target loads.

If it is chambered only for 2 3/4" shells, like a Light Twelve, do you have the friction rings set properly for light loads?

Yes it is a magnum. Does that mean that no 2 3/4" loads will fire semi auto?
I used to own one, it means the gun will not cycle 2 3/4", 1 1/8 oz. target loads.

I don't have my old data front and center on the A5 3" but I believe it should cycle with some 2 3/4" loads, I believe 1 1/4 oz. and up.

Anybody ever try that? Load the mag with light loads and work the bolt handle? Or does it stove pipe?
In 1979/80 I had my "A5 phase" and had a Light Twelve and a 12g Mag.

I tried the Mag for singles trap by using it this way. The gun worked like a low recoiling, straight pull single shot. The barrel/bolt would recoil back a bit but stay locked, I pulled the bolt back slowly and it would lock open with the shell hanging out of the port for easy pocketing.

I quit using it because I soon learned that I far prefered a dedicated trap gun with trap dimensions. At the time I had my 870TB trap for four years and was very used to it. Plus I had warranty "issues" with Browning with the Light Twelve and being younger, got P.O.'d and sold them rather than fighting to resolve it like I would now.

The gun functioned fine as a single shot.

Right now at our club there is a young guy with an A5 Mag about as old as he is. He is shooting it as a single shot with trap loads and enjoys shooting it, it works fine like that.
