I'm looking for more advanced training myself and I know it will produce a great deal of benifit because my eyes went from completely closed to wide open with the very little contemporary training I do have. With my Utah CCW permit training I was introduced to this book and I read every word of it. At the minimalist level, it wil vastly raise your awareness.
NRA GUIDE to the BASICS OF PERSONAL PROTECTION IN THE HOME. A fantastic and fasinating read. e-bay or Amazon.

Getting the extra training is a darn good idea, BUT you can't schedule an emergency. If your class is next week and the creeps come this week, they aren't going to let you reschedule.

Take a few minutes as soon as you can, preferrably yesterday, lay out a plan for you and your loved ones living with you. Practice that plan. You won't be perfectly prepared but you will be more prepared than now. Use every opportinity to shoot that gun. Load it, unload it a million times then do it until you can do it in your sleep. Sound stupid? It is, until Johnny-Bad_Guy comes knocking. At that moment, all the people that called you stupid will be glad you were.
Been there.
