when my grandfather passes he left me his ithaca gun a 16g model #376300 with a suplesser on the end and a corncob pump. whats the purpose of the suplesser it looks like it was put on during manufactoring.

it prevents muzzle flash and it has a full choke that screws on the end of it, but i was wandering the purpose of having it on there cause it looks like it was put on during manufactoring..
