New barrels and their bores???

Hey all, just curious if anyone knows the story behind some shotgun barrels. I recently purchased a Mossberg 590A1, cylinder bore, parkerized barrel and I noticed that the bore is not very shiny like my older shotguns. I stopped at a local gun dealer also, looked at a new Remington, Mossberg and Browning and the bores of the new barrels all looked dirty and I was told this is one way the companies are cutting back on costsfor they are not finishing them as well as they used to and that it has no affect on performance, just looks. Is this for real, how are you supposed to tell if the damn things are clean or not? Mine looks like it has a build-up of plastic residue from the wad from shooting buck-shot. I have used both stainless-steel, copper-clad brushes and a snake, all with Hoppes#9, Break-Free, Gun Scrubber and Shooters Choice#7 Wad Solvent...scrubbing for about an hour and a half to no avail. Any suggestions or is this just something we have to put up with when purchasing a new shotgun these days?

Thanks in advance,

RAZO

put a little oil on a cotton patch and run it thruogh the bore a few times. Before you go shooting take the oil out with a dry cotton patch.
Am I going crazy or did I answer this same post a couple times already?
Pumper, you went crazy a long time ago. I know because i was there waiting for ya

nah...I posted it in the General section and the Gunsmithing sections. Don't worry, I am assuming you are sane.

Hmmm... very strange. I have a Mossy 590A1 that I got about 3 months ago and my barrel is mirror-shiny...

Let us know if you find anything else out...
if you wanted to, Brownells sells a shotgun bore honer. You just us a power drill. Although being a hater-I'm mean-strongly disliker of Mossbergs, I would have to say: "You can't polish a fresh turd. You can only polish a frozen turd (my opinion)." Some of the guys in my class came up with that idea.
Jambo,

Just out of curiousity - what don't you like about Mossys?

I always like to hear both sides of the story... :D
I don't like:
the aluminum receiver
the cheap plastic saftey button
the cheap plastic triggerguard
the way they feel (it feels cheap, my opinion)
the way they sound when you cycle the action (it sounds cheap, my opinion)
the ergonomics
the lax tolerances
the company (don't ask. they just haven't made a good impression on me)

Also, compare the interals of a Mossberg 500 to that of a Remington Model 31. look at exploded views and cutaways of the two. they're very similar. I'd take the Model 31 over the 500 because the Model is 31 has tighter tolerances and simply because I dislike Mossberg and the guns that the make and I love Reminton and most of the guns that they make.

I hear ya, Jambo... :D

But don't forget, we're talking about the 590A1 which has steel and metal where the 500 has aluminum and plastic.

Also, lax tolerances are what make the guns more reliable in harsh conditions, aren't they?

But other than that, I agree that Mossberg has a "rough" feel to it. A nice Remy has the feel of a luxury car, whereas the Mossy is your grandfather's old Ford pickup :D

They both get the job done, but I agree, they feel (and sound) completely different.

Despite much criticism, I've yet to see a Mossberg with a worn out receiver. In fact, I've offered to buy several Mossberg bashers who come into my shop a steak dinner at the best restaurant in town if they can show me one. So far, I haven't bought any dinners. Personally, I find the contols layout on the Mossbergs far supirior to any other pump on the market. Mossbergs do have a full 10 yr. warrantee and their customer service is MILES ahead of Remington,Winchester or Browning. Production tolerances, materials, workmanship and quality control sucks on all of them if you ask me. I have a couple of real abortions from Browning in the shop for repair right now. The plastic safety buttons on the Mossbergs aren't a big issue as far as I'm concerned, as they are so easily and inexpensively replaced with steel. I already gave my opinion on the plastic trigger guard issue in Pumpers thread. "getting rid of an 870 on purpose" so won't repeat it here.

You're entitled to your opinion, as we all are. I don't speak highly of Mossbergs simply because the just don't do anything for me. I would only own on if I won one in drawing, like at a DU banquet, in which case it would probably have some DU engraving. If not, I'd use all time just to see how much it could take, but of course I'd take an 870 just in case.

Crap! I forgot to log in again! that last message was mine, BTW.
O.K. Those last two messages were mine. But the very last one can be deleted.

I don't want to be shot by either gun! :D
But I wouldn't feel as bad, mentally, if I were shot by the Model 31. It would just suck alot more if got shot by a gun that absolutely hate -er, I mean- strongly dislike. Of course you be in just as much pain.
