Hello everyone great site you have here. I have applied for my rifle/shotgun permit and it should be here in 2-6 months. I would like to buy my firearm before I get my permit and keep it in long island or upstate. I would like a gun that is fun for ranges and good for HD. At first I wanted a saiga .308 rifle, but I am not allowed to have a clip for a rifle or shotgun that holds more than 5 rounds. They only make 8 rounders for the saiga. Then I looked at a remington vs or pss .308 because they sounded like they would be fun for sub MOA shooting but not good for HD. So it comes down to this...Get a mossberg 935 or something a little better and take up the hobby of skeet, trap and clay (don't know the difference lol) and that will be my only gun for awhile. Or Remington vs or pss for target AND a norinco riot gun for HD. I would be willing to drive about 1 1/2 hours form the city to find a skeet/trap/clay range. How much does it cost? I really just want to get my gun take a class on gun safety/cleaning/striping and get a good lock

Congrats on deciding to wade through the NYC registration morass... hope it goes well for you.

Shooting clay targets (any game, skeet, trap, 5-stand, SC,...)is a gas; getting hooked is easy, even if you have to drive a couple of hours to get to the range.

A Remington 870 pump combo is a good place to start, with a 28" bird barrel & an 18" HD barrel. That will do both jobs you're looking for and get you going until you get some more experience and decide what gun you want next. A good 870 is also a lifetime keeper :)

Don't fool yourself :) I bet within a year you own at least three different firearms...

It's a slippery slope: I bought a 9mm SIG-Sauer pistol just to get into shooting. Then I got a Mossberg 590A1 to try shotgunning. Shooting buckshot on paper made me curious about skeet and I ended up getting a Beretta 391 semi-auto. Shooting a lot of skeet made me curious about over-unders, so I ended up getting a very old Franchi. And finally, shooting slugs out of my shotgun made me wish I had a rifle, so I got a Remington 700 VS.

The funny thing is, every time I've bought a gun I've said, "This is definitely my last gun. What else could I possibly need???"

I bet most of the other guys have roughly the same story to tell :)

Hi MrCloudz,
I am also from the nyc area, and there is a trap/skeet/ and rifle range on RT25A just east of the William Floyd Parkway in Ridge. Guys from the city show up, and they say that unless its a really bad traffic day, travel time is around 1 1/2 hr.
I shoot trap with a pump, my brother-in-law with a semi- auto. we both do well. Just about every kind of gun shows up sooner or later. There is lots of information you can pick up about the different types and models of shotguns by reading the postings on the different boards. There is a search feature to zero in on anything specific.
The price for one round of trap or skeet is Five dollars. Its a good day out, with lots of nice guys. Good luck on your shotgun selection!

Man I have alot of choices...The mossberg 935 looks good but the H&K Gold Lion mk II look's eaven better(only hold's 3rds tho). If I go with a pump I like the look of the 835 and can get one for $189. This leaves me with alot of money to add stuff. The 835 comes with a turkey choke and a full choke but I can buy kind I want right? It comes with a stock drop kit too... hmmmm wonder what that does. Getting the 835 leaves money for a red dot sight and other stuff. Anyone know If I can use the russian kobra sight? what pump do you use woody?

I would sugest a 870 remington with two barrels (to start)
One for Skeet an another for bad guys.
Mossberg and Winchester are good choices as well.
Remember these are great guns and they will serve you well.
Once you get to know yourself and your skill and familuarity with firearms grows you may or may not want to add to what you have.
there is an ocean of choices out there. when it comes to shotguns, a good pump is one of the easiest to shoot well.
I dont have a clue about dealing with NYC gun laws, I admire your courage and fortitude to try to navigate through that
Mess.
Good Luck and have fun.

Yes it is a mess $155 every 3 years for the R/S permit ($255 for a handgun permit) and City Council wants to pass a law that all gun owners in nyc have to get liability insurance for each of their firearms AND 1 gun every 90 days . I would like to get the mossberg but I keep seeing on this forum that they rattle.

Hi mrcloud-
I shoot a 26 inch barrel, benelli nova pump. Take your time picking out your shotgun. Make the rounds of as many gun dealers as you can, and ask to see the different models your interested in. Everybodys different, and what fits someone else, may not work for you. Good Luck!

Good luck with it. I feel your pain as I live in Boston and the laws in Mass are ridiculous as well. I applied for my permit back in June and it still hasn't shown up yet.
