Help.....
I recently acquired a 12 GA shotgun and am having trouble finding ammo/components.

It came with 2 boxes of ammo. The boxes are marked "12 GA 60mm size AAA". Bottom of the round is marked "Swartklip".

I cannot seem to find any pertinant information in order to get reloading components (I use a MEC Sizemaster).

Anybody have any information/suggestions?

Swartklip ammo is manufactured in Cape Town, South Africa and the 12 gauge ammo that they produce is designed for use in riot control. I can not find any reference to a US importer. As this is a fairly unique ammo I wouldn't attempt to reload these rounds. Rather, go out and get some Remington STS or Nitro shells and use these for reloading. I would keep the Swartklip's around as a conversation piece as you will probably not be able to get any more of them.---AFG

By the way: What kind of shotgun is this and where did you "acquire" it. It looks like whoever you got it from has spent some time overseas.---AFG

Thanks AFG.... I had already decided not to use the Swartklip ammo.

However, what I need is for a reloading "cookbook" for this round: Since it is only 60mm (a bit over 2.3 inches after crimping), I figure I need to either buy "short" hulls or cut down standard hulls.

I cannot find any manufacturers that make them, so I am looking for data on long the hull is before crimping, what kind of wad to use, how much powder to drop, does it use the same primer I use for my 2 3/4 inch shells, etc.

Any ideas?

Is the gun actually chambered for 60mm or is it chambered for 70mm (2 3/4")? What type of gun is this that we are talking about and where was it manufactured? I have not dealt with too many of the European guns, but I know that some of them were chambered for some odd size shells. I would check on this and see if you can actually shoot the 2 3/4 shells.---AFG

Before I fired or reloaded for that gun, I would have it checked out very well by a competent gunsmith. The american 2 3/4 inch shells are 70 mm, which will cause some constriction in the forcing cone. I would say that you have the old 2 1/2 inch length chamber.
If you are wanting a good shooter, and not opposed to damageing the asthetics of the gun, it may be possible to have your gunsmith use a forcing cone reamer to lengthen the chamber out to 2 3/4 inch length, making it safe for the 2 3/4 inch american loads.

I have a few boxes of SWARTKLIP AAA which we used to use here for goose pre lead ban. It's a good load for similar targets I think a 3 inch chamber is needed. I keep them now for fox shooting in places where I can't use a rifle
