Greetings to you all...I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I have two sxs: a 1980's era Ugartechea 30 (16 GA) and an LC Smith in 12 GA, both with modified and full chokes. I have not yet fired either, but intend to start some 5-stand/sporting clays in the spring, maybe birds in the fall. Should I pattern them before opening the chokes or is it reasonable (wise) to open both to modified/improved cylinder before I hit the range? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

My advice would be to pattern the guns first and then shoot them for a season. If you feel that there is room for improvement, then consider barrel work.

If the L.C. has any collector value, that value will go out the window with modified barrels.
