Given the freezing rain today and twenty degree weather tomorrow I’m not shooting so I thought I would post on a topic that is of absolutely no use to anyone. I’d like to clear up a few things about Perazzi engravings. First engraving number 112 shown below:
Rectangle Eye glass accessory Material property Tints and shades Font

The creatures shown have been referred to variously as “gargoyles”, “dragons” or “gryphons “. They are none of the above. These are wyverns. Wyverns are two-legged dragon-like creatures with long pointed tails that were often used in heraldry hence their use here. They do not spit fire but can spit noxious substances. Next engraving 25:
Rectangle Eye glass accessory Revolver Font Tints and shades

PSA has described this as a Griffon. It is not. Griffons (or giffins or gryphons) have the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. This is the winged lion, symbol of Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice. It is fitting that flowers are spewing from its mouth because it was a symbol of both war and peace. The bottom side of the engraving shows angels holding dead game which I did not think could happen until I came upon the following scholarly work by Larson:

I hope this clears things up.

Thank you for clearing these things up. I was wondering about the two engravings that you addressed. Now that I know the first is not gargoyles and that the other is not just a loin and do not want either, especially at $45,000.00 each. What a savings for me.

Pacific Sporting Arms has a Wyvern for $45,019.00 but they also show it on GI for like $43K and change. I was actually looking at a used one at PSA early this year for $30K but passed and bought a new Kolar Regal instead. I think they have it for sale again at the same price. Either way it must be a deal with prices going up. The cost of gold on guns is pretty pricey. I was looking at a Krieghoff Gold Bavaria Royale vs a standard Bavaria Royale and it worked out to about $3k for each gold embellishment on the receiver.

I think that at the time PSA posted that Wyvern standard SCO ‘s were 35-37K so I suspect that gold adds 8-10,000 to the SCO price. With the recent price increase I would suspect the current SCO gold price is now close to 50K. Personally I’m not a big fan of gold in the main images of the engraving.

They make very few guns spiffier than an SC 3. Mostly , you make a deal w/ them to make you what you want, and they do it.

I have seen an SCO-sideplates w/ the gold lion . And it was a stunner. (Pigeon gun)

It is true that they do whatever you want. You can even have pictures of your wife/girlfriend/mistress engraved on it. I have looked into it and there is a significant up charge for custom engraving of the same complexity as the standard and you lose the usual dealer discount.

As another aside I agree with Sera. If you’re into engraving the new SC3 engravings are a great bang for the buck. Dan Loker worked on mine at the NE regionals and I caught him staring at it exclaiming “these are exquisite!” They are not on the website. You have to ask the dealer for pictures.

I have an SC 3 # 100 engraving pattern. It is deeply engraved and quite the looker. My wife has an SC 3 w/ game scene engraving w/ the dog facing the wrong way (an error) which according to Perazzi is now a one of a kind.

On the pigeon circuit , I have seen some beauties. SCO sideplates , etc.

Also some Fabbris that are out of the ordinary , incl (supposedly) the only funeral model.

I shot with a gentleman with a Fabbri funeral grade just a couple weeks ago.

Perazzi’s look great just plain and blued. They don’t need engraved unlike Krieghoff’s which are butt ugly unless engraved. I just love the look of a plain blued Perazzi receiver with a nicely figured non-adjustable comb stock. I think the aesthetics of a Perazzi comb is awful.
