Changed homes after 30 years and my area reserved for reloading is about 50% smaller. I was thinking about storing my reloading powders in one of those storage cabinets made out of plastic with a lock to keep the grandkids out. Planned to put it in the panic room due to lack of flammable materials but wonder if in case of a fire there would be less chance of any kind of explosion if it was stored out in open storage racks. I have a good deal of powder but its all stored in the original containers, plastic, paper, metal, ect. Figured to store the primers in a seperate location also under lock. Might be better off trying to find a fireproof door for the panic room and then it might not make much difference how its stored. Just wondering what some of you other shooters thought. Thanks for any input.

What the heck is a "panic room" ?
The open rack idea sounds good, but I'd try and keep the powder as low to the ground as possible. Plastic storage cabinet would probably be fine I suspose since it wouldn't allow for pressure buildup/explosion should it catch on fire.

Better yet, is there a way to just keep the grandkids out of your reloading area, or is your reloading area shared with their play area?

You don't need any fire doors.

At the most basic, smokeless powder only burns efficiently in a tightly confined area. You've probably got cleaning stuff around the house more dangerous.

In your situation, the main threat to the powder isn't some highly unlikely form of ignition — it's those kids, who will poke and pry into everything they can find the moment you turn your back.

Just store the powder on shelves or whatever in a cool, dry atmosphere behind a door outfitted with an exterior-type lock and key.

Back to the question,, I store my primes away from the powder in a room that has a quality lock on it, but then, I don't have any yougsters to worry about any more.

Back to the question,

Don't use plastic totes. Build a wooden box.
Plastic will hold in the moisture.
My box is 18" wide 24" high 36" long with strong hinges & paddle lock hasp it has 1/16" gap between the boards the allow for air flow but the lid is tight fitted tung & grove so nothing can fall in.

Primers are kept in a old kitchen cupboard that is quite high but still has a paddle lock on it.

In answer to your question on the panic room, in my state they have started putting a cement room, 8" walls and ceiling that is part of the basement, its a 100 to 120 sq foot room with a single doorway with no actual door, to take shelter in case of Tornadoes. I have a couple of friends who have put vault doors on them for storage rooms but that wasn't what they were designed for.

I remember those became real popular during the Cuban missile crisis.

My child has grown up, goes shooting with me and hasn't given me any grand children. [Relief] While I can understand the problem of storage, I don't currently have that problem. [Relief]

That having been said the wooden box sounds like a great idea.
