promo winchester hulls

I cut apart several winchester promo hulls and the new AA hull besides the AA hull being a little stronger I can see no differance in the base of the shell. The base wad looks the same in all of the ones I cut apart.Just wondering what anybody else found.

Tom,
Look man I may be wrong here but I dont think I am. The Winchester AA wads are compression formed as to where the promo shells are not. I think the brass in the promo shells are a lower grade metal than the Win AA. I have reloaded promos before and they have a tendancy to crimp up on the sides. I have reloaded them with little luck.
There my 2 cents.
Marine; You are indeed wrong. At least now you are! Before Winchester came out with the NEW AAs you were absolutly correct! But, the new AAs are no longer compression molded and the promo hulls are made with the same design. You have to pay attention to what you are doing if you want to reload the cheapo winchester hulls or they will indeed buckle. So will STSs! I've often wondered how Winchester loads the cheapo hulls the first time without buckling them??

Here's what I see. I used a dial caliper to measure the new grey AA, Winchester Universal, and a Western Target and Field. The two non AA had a silver colored base.

AA wall thickness .025"
hull height 2.68"
base wad height .821"

Western wall thickness .018"
hull height 2.71"
base wad height .79"

Win Universal wall thickness .018"
hull height 2.71"
base wad height .79"

All measurements are averages.

There is a slight difference between AA and the others. The cheapies must have a bigger inside capacity since it is longer, and has less base wad. Also because they have the same outside diameter it will have more capacity due to a thinner wall. What does this mean? I dont really know. I would think they could be loaded the same, but would more than likely have different ballistics.

The cheapies do run through my 9000G just like the AA, and just like the old AA.

Good and valuable info, Brian.

Thanks for the post.
Thanks BRIAN I knew they were thin because they buckle when you look at them wrong. I think I will load them once and throw them. Thanks again.

No problem Tom

It seems to me that these hulls could be good for the guys that shoot semi autos. They can be had from anywhere for nothing. Could then be loaded once and left on the ground where the hit. I hate picking up my hulls.

I have also tried to identify the Universal case and had decided the Universal case was the "Win Polyformed with plastic wad" case listed on Alliant's data site. However, in correspondence with Alliant, I learned that, while the Universal is a polyformed case, it is not the same case their testing was done with. (And, no it is not the same as a AA, even though it uses a similar base wad.) Alliant advised they do plan to test and develop data for the Universal case in the future.

Having said that, I have reloaded several thousand of the Universal cases without a problem (on a MEC Grabber). I selected my recipe from load data producing the lowest pressures in similar cases. While I am not going to offer load information, I think if you have an understanding of case types and pressure factors - and procede with caution - it can be done safely. However, indiscriminant experimentation could be dangerous.

IMO the WIN promotional hulls aren't worth the box that they put them in. Neither are the new AA's for that matter. I've had absolutely NO luck reloading either and I've been reloading for over 10 years. The old AA's or activs are the best - bar none. But as neither are made and are getting harder to find I've been using the purple Fiocchi's and Remington "game load" (black w/8pt crimp) with a lot of success. They don't last 1/2 as long as the older AA's but they're cheap and readily available at the range for free.
I have also had great luck with the black remington 8 crimps.
i have loaded many win poly hulls, load them like a rem. on the light side. 17 gr red dot, clays, solo 1000, pink claybuster, 1 oz shot. i like fiocchi and the cheapo remingtons. they load well.
