Yes you bore is smooth and you can shoot them out of your gun. Early loads held a pumpkin ball of lead that rattled down the barrel and weren't of much use beyond 40 yards. Kinda like a muzzle loader shooting round ball, kinda. In time the refinement of single-projectile loads for the shotgun developed into the "rifled" slugs that, imparted a spin on the projectile using the wind that passed the bullet. I would go with a rifled slug if you plan on hunting with it. I don't know of any company atleast off the top of my head that makes these anymore. I am sure you can still get these somewhere, and maybe some one has found a way to make them usable out past 40yards. I still think the easiest way for you is rifled slugs. They are cheaper and Walmart carries tons of them.
