Scratches like that are very difficult without sanding and filling, easy to do but you may not be ready to completely refinish. Steam will help with gouges bust most scratches are difficult. The process would be to wet sand with BLO, or as for finishes, several options. Start with 320, as for 1000 grit you won’t notice ant difference past 600. You may also try BLO with pumice “Sand in” Pumice tense to fill scratches well try 4F. This MAY eliminate the need to sand fill. The finest London guns are a built up over 30 plus coats of mostly BLO, no finish can rival it for looks. Poly is shiny but very bartop and fake looking, although weather resistant. Let us know how she turns out. Don’t be afraid of it.
