:?: I'm the Safety Officer of The Southern Michigan Gun Club in Kalamazoo, MI. Our club is considering setting up a new trap/scrap range. If we angle it just right it will give us just barely 300 yards range to a public road and neighboring properties. The Board of Directors are concerned about the new reload recipes for 1550 fps shells. Is there any data available for these loads as far as maximum pellet range for shot sizes #'s 5,6, 71/2,8, and 9? TIA.

Velocity is not nearly as important as shot size in how far a shot will carry. While faster muzzle velocity will give a LITTLE more range, it won't be much. A much greater concern in your situation is that someone, either intentionally or unknowingly, will shoot trap or scrap with a load of #2's or worse yet, some BUCK shot loads. Don't underestimate the stupidity of some people ...... even shotgunners.

We never underestimate the stupidity of shooters. That's why I'm looking for some hard data to help determine whether or not to go ahead with this project. So far the largest shot that has been used on the current skeet and trap ranges (that we know of) is #4. (The size of shot to be used on any range is restricted to 7-1/2).
