My local shop has a Remington 11-87 Premier in like new condition, but it's missing the box, literature and extra choke tubes. The asking price is $450. I broke it down and I really can't see any evidence that it's been fired. Sound like a good price? How about the model 11-87...good shotgun for general use? I'm a novice shotgunner and looking for advise. My shotguns to-date have been pump or side-by-sides.

Remington has made a lot of 11-87s and 1100s (which are very similar except can't interchange light and heavy loads). They are good reliable guns and parts are cheap and easy to obtain. If the gun is in like new condition and has at least one choke tube in the barrel, $450 doesn't sound too far out of line. Most places charge about $600 for a new one. Extra tubes are only about $15, and can be found about anywhere, so I wouldn't sweat that.

If it is a 12 gauge, it will be great for general use. If it is a 20, it will still be pretty darned versatile since it has that 3" chamber, although it wouldn't be my first choice for waterfowl. The 20 is a lot handier to carry though.

An auto will need more cleaning than the pumps and SXS you're used to, but it is not that bad.

Good price, I found one in 20Ga at Wally World for same price, I took it. I've put about 500 rounds through it so far and no problems as of yet.

It is a 12 gauge Rem 11-87. Thanks for the feedback. It also has the Light Contour barrel and feels very handy...weight-wise. I haven't been bird hunting in close to 20 years. Back then it was with a Mossberg 835 and after a extended day of shooting doves, my shoulder told me about it. I'm getting into trap and Sporting Clays with some friends and thought an autoloader would give me a little less punishment.

I have 2, a 20 and a 12. I have to say I shoot them better than just about any other more expensive shotgun I own. Don't buy it if you're afraid to clean it. If you do buy it you'll get years of use out of it. Try to get the dealer to throw in a choke or two. Remington will send you a manual for free. It's made in the USA too.

Not a bad price. You don't need a box and as stated the choke tubes are cheap enough to pick up a few. Especiall being the Premier model.

I have an older SPS and it has done it's share of work on deer and never given me a problem.

I think you'll like it. Cleaning isn't really that big a deal. I always dreaded it. Just got my first semiauto last summer. After every shooting session I just pull off the forearm and wipe the black crap off the magazine tube and the little rings that slide on it. Then I spray it with CLP and put it away. Every so often you'll need to drop the trigger assembly and clean the bolt and inside the receiver, but not as often. No malfunctions so far with either my SX-1 12 ga. or my 11-87 20 gauge, and I've been shooting puny 3/4 oz loads at about 1200 fps out of the 20 gauge. I love the lack of recoil, but I reload and I hate going on an Easter Egg hunt after every round, so I shoot my OUs mostly. Oh, BTW, I was in Gander Mountain today and they are asking almost $700 for a new one.

Thanks for the feedback. Sold my Remington 870 that I'd set up for USPSA competition tonight on gunbroker, so the finances are straight, the dealer is open tomorrow, and I'll have a Remington 11-87 soon.

Made my first trip to the range today with my "new" Remington 11-87. Only fired 6 shots at the 50yd berm...had my son waiting to fire his 22LR rifle. Shot nice. It has been awhile since I shot a semi-auto shotgun. Much more pleasant than double barrels and pumps!

Thanks for the feedback. Your experiences and feelings on the Remington 11-87 helpled moving me the last step to buying it.

The American version of IPSC....USPSA = United States Practical Shooting Association. They are typically the combat pistol shoots, but have evolved into tactical rfile and shotgun events too. Basic set up on my 870 was a extended mag tube (8rds), shortened forearm for a "Side Saddle" shell holder, and high visibility sights (turkey hunting fiber optics). This was a basic set up. The top shooters have all sorts of other gadgets for speedloading and such.

Good choice. I've had absolutely no trouble out of my 11-87SC since buying it back in the early 90s. IIRC, I paid around $425 so you certainly didn't get robbed.
