A friend has recommended a Remington 870 12 gauge with an 18.25" barrel and extended mag for a home self defense shotgun. Where would I purchase this gun and how much should it cost?
You can buy it anywere guns are sold. If you find a gunshop that does not know what a Remy 870 is get the hell out of there! Expect to pay between $450-$600 depeding on the model configuration.
if you didnt care about perfectness, the cheapest way to do it would be to buy an express and buy a replacement barrel, which can be had for 100 bucks or less
Thank both of you for your advice. I like the idea of shorter barrel for home defense. So your answers give me a way to go. I don't care about what it looks like and hope I never have to use it. Thanks again.

You should think about ways to practice with it. Sporting clays is good. You might suck with the 18" barrel, but making the platform second nature is most important.
By the way, I have the same shotgun you described in 870 Police. I got it for $300 used but excellent condition from www.jgsales.com. You don't seem to care about the gun being pristine. Go the used route and save a couple hun. If you buy online, for your own happiness, make sure to be a dick and ask way too many questions.
The Finn has them for $269. after a $ 30 remington rebate. they are a 7 round gun with 18" barrel and have synthetic stock. If your local store doesn't have them they should be able to order one for you.
