I picked up a Remington Sportsman 48 20-gauge in nice condition with a vent rib improved cylinder barrel. On the right side of the barrel near the receiver are the letters “REP” and a star. Can anyone advise what this marking means?

That's a sorta scarce gun and it looks nice.
