I just got my versa max sportsman yesterday and shot it yesterday and today. So far, no jams or anything unusual with 175 rounds of 1 oz. and 1 1/8 oz. loads. I only shot 2 rounds of 3" duck load, the recoil is soooo much better than the benelli supernova and Black Eagle 1 that I had been previously been using. On the trap loads, I don't feel it at all. The gun is everything that is advertised. I have been busting clays the last two days and going out in the blind tomorow.

I have been hunting strictly with the Versa Max for waterfowl for two full seasons now and not one hiccup. Hunted everything from dry/dusty/muddy fields for early season geese to bitter/snowy/icy conditions for late season ducks, followed by salty air/water from the Gulf of Mexico on a diver hunt. Even use those dirty Federal Speed Shok shells a lot. It's a great gun!

I have liked mine and have had it two seasons. I have read some bashing on them but ironically, not from owners, just people whose brothers-sisters-best friends in laws let them hold it.
Yep exactly, that is usually what happens these days and the bad thing about this internet chatter. Lots of people like to talk and be the biggest and baddest online, when in fact in real life they are just the opposite.

After doing a lot of research on them, I'm about ready to spring for a Versa Max myself. I just wish they had a model with walnut furniture.
Patience DHart, patience. Nothing wrong with having one of each when time comes.
fallsflight... you're speaking my language, friend. I would have no qualms about picking up a synthetic Versa Max now, and then adding another, with walnut furniture, when they become available.

I have a hunch that Remington will develop the Versa Max line as time moves along... positioning it as their flagship semi-auto shotgun. Some deluxe versions, with beautiful walnut furniture, and some sporting clays versions simply must be in the planning!

Hopefully, Remington will do with their Versa Max line as Browning has done with their superb Maxus line:

I too like remington and own several 870's and an 887, when it came time for a semiauto purchase I wanted to buy the versa max but it just didnt shoulder well or feel right for me so I went the Maxus (a purchase that I have no regrets!). I duck hunt with a guy that has a first year versamax and he has never had a problem. If you want a gas operated gun and the versamax doesnt fit you well, check out the maxus or sx3.

Hey guys been looking for a new semi auto and being a Remington guy I love the idea of this gun. I was just wondering if guys are finding a difference from the original versa max compared to the sportsman edition. Is it worth the extra money for the original? Thanks
stan... there is a comparison between the Synthetic and the Sportsman here:

Personally, I feel the extras would be worth the extra money for the Synthetic. But for each person, that would also depend on just how tight the budget is.

a5magg... go for it, man. I'd say it ranks right up there with the current crop of today's semi autos, plus or minus a little, here or there, for this feature or that... and realizing that none of them will be a PERFECT gun, in all respects, for all purposes.

The Versa Max truly is a very comfortable gun to shoot, even with 3" magnum loads... the felt recoil is quite pleasantly soft! And it's notably reliable with a very wide variety of loads.

I happened to select the Tactical model (dumb name, I know - but it's designed with high capacity for defense purposes). I've only had it a short time, but so far, I've been very pleased with how it shoots everything from 2 3/4" 1 oz. light target loads, 2 3/4" 00 high velocity Buck shot, and 3" magnum high velocity slugs. Handles them all reliably and with little noticeable difference in felt recoil.

This model comes with very handy accessories to change the angle and cast of the stock, as well as the length of pull, and height of the comb. Sweet ability to set-up the gun to fit just right.

Given my experience with this VMT model, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a 26" or 28" model, set up for hunting. The "Sporting" model is the least expensive, but has the least features as well. The "Synthetic" model offers more customizable features and is more expensive.

a5magg.... remember Mick's sage advice... "it's a gas, gas, gas!" (Jumping Jack Flash)

I think you'll soon become another satisfied Versa Max owner.

I have now shot over 3500 shells through my versamax and had no issues whatsoever. I have cleaned it due to this being a habit i have always done but i feel it would keep going without cleaning if you were that way inclined. I did buy an SRM terror .700 choke for this gun but other than that addition i felt necessary for my intended use the gun is perfect as it is.
