A .308 will probably punch through most interior walls, if it's just woodframe/drywall. Heavy buckshot will penetrate also. But so will many handgun rounds as well...

It's said that most 5.56 actually has lower penetration than 9mm, because the round tears apart more easily. Hardball will still probably penetrate, but will lose a little bit of velocity.

I would say that you should consider the setup of your home and how likely a penetrating round would hit an unintended target. If it's just you and your wife in one room, in a house by yourself, then overpenetration isn't something you probably have to worry too much about.
